Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check each one' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust by pulling the plunger out (pushing it in)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I have disconnected the battery twice, and have been able to restore it, but then I'll have the problem again at some point.

Ignition switch replaced about 30k ago, but thanks for that tip.

I had no troubles until I changed the switch, but I don't see how the two can be related.

Suggestion
It appears you have eliminated every switch on the clutch and brake pedals that make the CC work (and from the above post apparently you don't even need to worry about those switches anyway), therefore you must go to the next level and check the relay and then the CC unit itself.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 2002 996 with 142,000 miles. Recently my cruise just stopped working. After searching threads and trying the suggested solutions I traced it to a bad clutch switch, which I replaced. Problem solved, or so I thought. (Tail lights work.)
About 10% of the time the green indicator light on the dash will not come on. No matter how many times I turn the key off or on, it makes no difference. But I can get in the car again later, and all is fine. I have disconnected the battery twice, and have been able to restore it, but then I'll have the problem again at some point.
I had no troubles until I changed the switch, but I don't see how the two can be related. Getting ready to take a 1,500 mile trip next week and will be annoying if I don't have cruise for any leg of this journey.
If there is a thread addressing this I have been unable to find, but please link away if it's out there.
First rule of 996 ownership when squirrely electrical stuff starts happening - change the ignition switch. It's a $12 part. NAPA keeps them in stock. Takes under an hour to swap out. The only special tool you'll need is the smallest flathead screwdriver tip you can find - almost the size of a jeweler's screwdriver. It should only be about an inch long. The one on the bottom far left of the picture below is perfect. This switch is basically a regular wear item. Not a bad idea to keep a spare in your glovebox along with the screwdriver tip.
Have to agree with KC. Probably ignition switch. You said the tail lights work..do you mean ALL tail lights and brake lights? Bad bulb, bad ground or burned out brake bulb has been known to cause problems with cruise control.
You might want to check that Clutch switch again to make sure it is engaging properly when the clutch is in the released position. If I recall, the clutch switch can be adjusted by pulling the plunger out (pushing it in). If the switch is not adjusted correctly, the system may think that the clutch is depressed. Also check the switch on the brake.
The clutch switch would prevent the cruise from working properly, but if I understand OP's description, the system is not coming on at all (the green light is on whenever the cruise system is enabled, not just when it's engaged to keep the car at speed)...
Agree with Schnell also on checking the ON/OFF switch on the stalk since the green indicator is not on.
Also, my previous igntion switch began to malfunction about 5 months after I replaced it.
There are two switches on the clutch pedal. There is another switch that senses the clutch is not depressed (it is located on top of the clutch pedal) This switch has to be made (clutch in up position) in order to turn the CC on. From my reading, the upper switch must be engaged for the CC to even turn on.
Upper switch on the clutch pedal is the one I replaced. I'm suspecting the ignition switch the more we talk. But if that's the culprit, would disconnecting the battery "reset" it? A bad connection is a bad connection, no?
The cruise safety switch can be broken and he should still be able to get the green light on the dash. My cruise safety switch on the clutch pedal was inop for a bit yet I was still able to activate the green light via the cruise stalk on the steering wheel.
From many other posts there are a lot of electrical gremlins that show up when the ignition switch is flaky...windows ghosting down, windows working/not working, alarm working/not working, display lit up/not lit up, engine firing/not firing, radio works/not works...you get the idea. It appears you have eliminated every switch on the clutch and brake pedals that make the CC work (and from the above post apparently you don't even need to worry about those switches anyway), therefore you must go to the next level and check the relay and then the CC unit itself. I would start with the fuses and ignition switch. Unfortunately I cannot locate a separate control unit for just the CC so that is controlled through/by the DME. Is it dry as a bone under the seat and has any water ever gotten in the car via drains or something like that...carpet wet? What the heck...maybe I'll just back down from this one...
When it doesn't work...have you tried just jiggling the key in the ignition to see is it lights up?
DBJoe,
Good thoughts! Yes, dry as a bone under the seats, no drainage issues, at least since I've had the car. I think the ign switch is the next thing to try. Won't have a chance for a couple weeks. I'll try wiggling the key!
I am having the same problem. green light is rarely seen anymore. Once in a while it will come on for an hour or so. doesn't seem to be a consistent event that makes it start or stop working..
