Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I purchased the removal tools, one side is in and clicked. The other side slides in an out with no click. I can't get the one tool out and the other one does nothing. Any suggestions on how to get the stereo out? Thanks

POST 2Original post

You MIGHT be able to get access to the side of it if you remove the side plate covers, if you have a 996.1, they are separate, I believe on the .2 it's a whole horse shoe. Once that is out, you could just as easily unscrew the four screws that hold the cage in and pull it out a few inches. Shouldn't take more than 20 minutes the first time you do it. Here it is with the cage pulled out a few inches. Four screws hold the cage in. Take the HVAC unit out first.

POST 3Original post

Can you shimmy the removal key up and down in order to get it to lock? That helped with mine. Also, mine never locked in place. I had to hold pressure on the removals key while pulling outward. Make sure you put painters tape on the sides of the horseshoe dash surround and a towel over the shifter and forward lower console in order to prevent any inadvertent nicks or scrapes.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I tried shimmying the key up, down, and sideways with no luck. I think I'm going to take it to a local stereo shop and see if they can help. I'm a little fearful to try Paul's suggestion. My luck I will break the surround and make things worse. Thanks

POST 5Original post

I remember it hurt my fingers when I pulled it out with the keys. You might not be pulling hard enough. Once I got it moving it popped right out.

POST 6Original post

You have to pull harder than youd expect. Additionally some one had put some rubber between the radio and the locking sleave (likely to reduce squeaking) Give it another shot since you have the right tool. Gently insert the keys until you feel/hear the click. Slightly pry left and right and give a tug. Be sure you are pulling with equal force left and right as its a tight fit.

POST 7Original post

Make sure the key that is not engaging is turned the correct way so it will push the spring out. And try using two screw drivers slipped through the holes in the keys when you have them both engaged- it makes it a lot easier to pull it out.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm going to keep trying, but I have had no luck in getting the key to latch in on the one side. I even tried pushing in on the radio to make sure it was latched properly. Thanks for all your suggestions. If I can get this out I can install the Yatour units Paul recommended and the subwoofer Diablo suggested. Thanks again

POST 9Original post

Had the same problem. Turned out to be the cheapo tools. Fired $20 to the guy at local stereo shop and he had it out in 10 seconds.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think that's what I'm going to try next. Figure the local shop deals with this kind of thing all the time. Reduce my frustration and potential damage. Thanks

POST 11Original post

I would say your tool probably doesn't fit correctly. If they are inexpensive ones they don't always work righgt.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They are cheep ones off ebay. I think I spent 5 bucks including shipping

POST 13Original post

You can also do a search because this is a fairly common problem. Past inputs may help you before going to the stereo shop, just a thought.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The first thing I did was a search of the forums. Unfortunately either I'm bad at searches or nothing came up that was applicable. Thanks

POST 15Original post

Mine clicked but was a lot harder to pull out than I expected. There was no way it was coming out and leaving my fingers intact. I did as mentioned above and used two screw drivers and gave it a good tug. It's possible that the one that's not clicking is not engaged anyway and if you pull hard enough it might come out.
