Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
It was the first mod that I did on my 996 C4S (smoked version) and the first mod that I did to my 997 TT (clear version).
Leading evidence: 'first mod' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'first mod' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace now' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Here is what I figure - everybody will change theirs out to clear/smoke and I'll have the one original car left in the US so my car will have extreme value!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

They're disliked because they're a requirement on "American Porsche's" (evidently it's a USA DOT thing - They're not the German purist thing). Classic high school peer group pressure thing...If you like "pumpkins" good for you, if not get clears or smokes...whatever...They're certainly not "Bad"
WELL...I certainly want to be a "cool guy" and not look like a "newb".
996_North: you are right about being a forumphile, wished I wasn't so I wouldn't worry so much about
: IMS, RMS, Ignition switches, Cracked heads, Oval liners, Cam Chains, Water pumps(renewed), Expansion tanks and Caps(renewed), AOS,...etc...
I love my 2005 996 C4S and plan to drive it inspite of the above listed fears!
After owning my '99 C2 for almost 9 years I still have pumpkins and don't plan on changing them regardless of opinions expressed on the net. I don't understand the fuss...
To each his own. I still have the original markers. Here is what I figure - everybody will change theirs out to clear/smoke and I'll have the one original car left in the US so my car will have extreme value! Ha!
The first mod on my Guards Red 996...changed out the pumpkins. The clear look sooooo much better with that color.
The first mod on my Black 997...changed out the pumpkins. I figure since it is a "Black Edition" it has to be monochromatic. I really want red brake calipers but that would be blasphemy.
I agree that a lot depends on the color of the car. I also just wanted to be cool.
It was the first mod that I did on my 996 C4S (smoked version) and the first mod that I did to my 997 TT (clear version). I like to remove the amber markers on dark colored cars, but I think they look good on lighter colored cars. I especially like the amber lights on a white car. I never made the switch on our silver Cayenne because it wasn't an easy swap like it is on a 996 or 997.
When I bought my CPO 986, the salesman came running out to the parking lot with a pair of clear side markers - he wasn't willing to let me drive off the lot with those orange abominations disgracing the side of my seal-gray Boxster.
This makes me suspect that the anti-orange movement extends beyond forum participation...
There is nothing wrong with fired eggs or pumpkins. Please ignore any of the comments from the bullies, ne'er do wells, minions, herds, misanthropes and shadenfreudes. These are the folks who feel so bad about their cars that they spend thousands of dollars trying to make it look like a 997. Enjoy the intended beauty and design of your 996 and if you want to make modifications do them because it's appealing to your eyes and heart.
Hey, he did say to ignore people like him
Wait. So should we ignore people like him? If we do then we should ignore his advise to ignore people like him. If so then we'd have to pay attention to him, but then we'd have to ignore him.
Friends don't let friends drive with pumpkins.
If your buddy was walking around with a booger hanging out of his nose, then you'd tell him to wipe his nose, right. Same thing as driving around with pumpkins.
Come on people, they're like 55 bucks to buy and take less than one beer to install.
I HAVE PUMPKINS ON MY 996
I like mine. If I happened to be at an auto show and the clears were the right price and came with orange bulbs, then I might change them out. Otherwise, meh, I don't really care.
Nah, but I'm an *** like that.
Don't know if you were serious, but the OEM version does come with the orange bulbs. (sorry, I haven't figured out if this is the new 'Good week in the 996 forum' thread or not yet)
Just personal taste. I changed them on my Forest Green Metallic but I actually like them on white or silver cars. And don't believe it about the 25 additional horses that the clear ones claim. Probably more like 20.
Hurdi, I think end quote THEN colon is what you meant to say. The "preview post" button is your friend.
gnat - Nice use of the WD-40 reference - I see what you did there.

996_North: Thanks for the advice. I must admit the question I asked was not so innocent! I figured it would bring out many humorous responses! Sorry!
I will stay with the pumpkins. I place value in original equipment on my cars, especially something like these cars. BTW I'm too old to be cool anymore and being a nerd is fine with me, as well!
I've had clear markers and clear bulbs for years with no police problems. I wouldn't worry about orange bulbs. Change them all to clear, no one would ever notice.
I would think that a white light shining from the side marker of your car would look kind of odd at night. I can see why it would be illegal.
If you don't like the look of the amber bulb through the clear lens, you can always buy the chrome lamps that look like chrome unlit and shine amber when illuminated.
Guys, I'm gonna tell you a secret. Some peeps on the other side of the world actually WANT pumpkins. They look to replace their clears with ambers.
Case in point, Japan has quite an assortment of AFTERMARKET amber lenses enthusiasts can buy to modify their cars with.
So anyone wanting to get rid of their pumpkins may fair better putting it on Japanese ebay and you may actually get something for them.
Mine is black(car, not booger!) so they were the first to go. Later, I completed the non-orange look by getting rid of the front ambers while I had the headlight lens off. In fact, they are sitting on my desk as a friendly reminder!
I put my pumpkins back (maybe temporarily), because on my car, the smoked versions make it look like something is missing! Where can I get those nice clear lenses?
