Granted it doesn't have a very aggressive stance and there isn't the ability to adjust settings like you would on coilovers but for an economical solution it's worth considering.

The factory gt3 and h&r street performance coilovers are great on the street , and probably a better choice if you are going to do the odd track day or de ,or just a more performance minded driver .

I really want to refresh my suspension completely with something that will work for street and the 5 or 6 track days I do a year.
I really liked this video where he gets poly bushings, ohlins coilovers and tarret sway bars and end links.
It transformed his 996 and eliminated the understeer.
What would be the most affordable complete suspension package I could get? Anyone sell a complete package? Can it be done for less than $1,500 For example using Ceika Coilovers (or any other affordable brand) and polybushings and H&R swaybars and end links? Where in California can someone set it up correctly with strings like in the video?

I went with the ROW M030 suspension which I believe to be a good compromise between street and track. Granted it doesn't have a very aggressive stance and there isn't the ability to adjust settings like you would on coilovers but for an economical solution it's worth considering.
Search on ebay, there are a few brand new Techart packages discounted a lot.
I think it will cost you a little more than your estimate.
You need to find a happy medium between daily driver and something that handles well on the track.
I went with Techart Springs, Sway bars and strut mount, Bilsten B8 (as recommended by Techart).
Then ordered every nut, washer and replaceable item.
It took me several months to gather everything, but it was worth it.
I had a few different instructors/club racers who remarked the car was well sorted for handling.
Take your time and do it right, it costs more to do it twice.
Good luck

996 Suspension
Whichever package you purchase I highly recommend Darrin at West End Alignment for the install and set up.
Darrin is located in Gardena and well known for setting up 911's.
Hard to beat the row mo30 kit for bang for the buck. Springs sway bars and shocks
Budget a little extra as you'll find some bushes etc than need doing

Just did the m030 on my '04 C2 cab and it is an outstanding package for spirited street driving. Might not be the best for serious track/competitive auto cross applications but now the car handles corners with significantly less understeer, less body roll and less rear squat under acceleration. Ride is firmer, more planted but not uncomfortable even to my wife. Car ride height only lowered about 1cm so still retained speed bump/driveway clearance. This is how a street Porshe should feel to me.
Found this through a PCA member in New York with a new-in-box full Carnewal kit for $1k US delivered. He traded in his 996 before installing and was tired of tripping over the box in his garage. Thanks Gabe! Great deal and great seller and I'm loving the transformation.
If your budget is $1500.00 , your choices are somewhat in this realm,
This is if you do it your self w/ exception of Alignment.
Personally, I think one factor to consider is quality of products your putting on.
ROW M030 setup + wear parts+alignment - Great Bang for the Buck
Mine came with a set of additional Bilstein B8's F/R w H&R Sport Springs + bought used H&R Adj.
Stock bushings and drop links in great shape.
It feels great, not to low, but low enough. My original setup had 31K miles, so not worn at all. This is very much improved, Firm but not harsh at all. My Conti's for the street are new,
Good Luck
we all have budgets, but consider this
spending $ XXX on components and installation and being miserable
spending slightly more (or less) and being delighted
I was lucky enough to go from M030 suspension to coilovers and upgraded sways
and a week later, new tires and alignment completely transforming the car
good luck with your quest
If you don't mind me asking and others probably want to know also.
How much were the bushings ?
Did you install them yourself ?
If not, how much for labor to install ?
in the earlier thread I suggest the simpler setup , the main reason being it's something that a owner could do with modest tool box and loaner compressor, but while the coilovers can also be installed by owner OP had a budget of $1500.00. That's pretty limiting on budget for quality components to go to the next level.
I watched the youtube video that was included, and it makes me wonder what was his cost, and how much was pro bono for including the shop in the video.
Personally I'm thinking $3,500-$4,000 for all he had done.
+1
I cannot see a complete overhaul of 996 Suspension for less than $3500 minimum in parts.
Just start to add up strut mounts, sway bars, springs and shocks, that is well over $2k and you are just getting started.
Put labor and a quality alignment, you get the picture.
You have a full set of bushings, coilovers, sway bars, and end links? This would be considered a complete suspension package in my opinion. Basically what the guy in the video did.
So how has it held up? Was it expensive? the bushes are cheap.
What do you guys think of this! At $682 with Free shipping seams like a great deal!

This is a great deal.

The coilovers , h&r street performance were 1700 , just shy of half the price of the ohlins in the video
The bushes , I think were about 600, and a heck of a lot of work . You need a press , torch etc. it's worth paying someone to do it . But it won't be cheap
they don't squeak . Zero .
the sway bars about 650
Set up , corner balance , alighnment 500
I couldn't be happier with the results .
Rides firm but compliant on the road , steering feel is phenomenal
Car handles like a dream
Well the h&r sp have cores made by bilstein and are very similar to the gt3 coilovers which also use bilstein and h&r components
These are both are similar to the pss9 or tens without the rebound adjustments
On the street with the odd track day a great choice .
If I was building a track car for a lot of different tracks , I'd go with a fully adjustable unit like the v3 or pss10
If I was rich I'd go with ohlins .
I am very happy with the h&r units after just shy of two years , I've never regretted the install . Or found I needed a fully adjustable unit .
Combine coilovers with stiff swaybars and a limited slip diff and you have mind blowing grip
I replaced almost my entire suspension set up last year. I did a lot of research. There is no way in HE e LL you can do this for $1,500 even if you did all the work yourself. Can you replace shock and spring only for $1,500? Yes. But there is a lot more to the suspension. I had to replace the wishbone / control arms on all four corners, the sway bars, the drop links, etc. everything with bushings has to be replaced. Sure you can replace the bushings only, which is a completely reasonable approach but it's all labor (a lot) and you need special tools. So while the bushing kit might only cost $200 or less the labor will add another, who knows, $600 - 900?
Let's start with the basics the core of the suspension: The best bang for the buck will be the ROW M30 or H&R Street Performance coilovers (which is the way I went) The difference in cost is $100 bucks so why not just get the coilovers. Those parts alone will run you $1,700. Plus install, plus alignment.
Sway bars, drop links, control arms. If you work to get the lowest prices possible on parts that aren't crap I can't see spending less than $1,000 and easily a lot more. The problem is you actually need all these parts to do the job right. The bushings on the car are definitely worn out if they are original.
Opinions will vary on this forum (of course) some person will chime in and say they did it all themselves for under $2,000 (yea right) but back here in reality a suspension refresh all-in is gonna run a minimum of $3,500
The row mo30 kit comes with springs shocks and swaybars .
Suncoast has them for 1400
Do all the work yourself , change only the bushes that look bad , with oem
And get an alignment done and you're going to be just over 2k
Can't see doing it for less . And that's if you are very competent
For Americans near the Canadian border , buy your parts in the USA and get the work done in Canada and you'll save 25% on Labour from the exchange rate
I didn't realize (or I forgot) ROW M030 includes the sway bars! If the OP can score that set up for $1400 that's clearly the way to go. With install and alignment it's still going to exceed $2,000.
Huge Difference.
I had the BC coil overs on my previous car. I thought they were great until i got a ride in the same car with an ohlins setup. Holy ****, the difference was outstanding. ohlins felt more comfy than OE. made my ride feel like it was on pogo sticks.
same with the KW v3. friend of mine had them in his BMW and I was blown away how smooth the car was. Certainly didn't feel like I was in a car equipped with coil overs as a suspension.
M030 is on Suncoast with sways for $1400 all day, every day.
Personally I'm leaning towards waiting a year and springing (ha!) for the Ohlins. My father said good things come to those who procrastinate
Checking out tire rack , a koni shock and eibach springs kit and an eibach sway bar kit is your cheapest option for a complete set up

Every time I look at the first post in this thread, I think "Vote for Pedro!"
One nit: Watching the video and listening to the narration, it sure sounds like the narrator's complaint about the "understeer that was fitted at the factory" is that the back end doesn't kick out under acceleration like "its tail-happy predecessors." Ever wild air-cooled 911 ride I've been on involved lift-off oversteer; accelerating out of a corner is what every 911 driver does who does NOT want to oversteer.
I need to spend a weekend doing poly bushings on both the 996 and the Corvette. The 996's aren't that old, but the poor 'Vette is louder from the rattles than the exhaust right now.
I think you can paraphrase this in several ways:
You get what you pay for.
There's no such thing as a free lunch.
Life's a compromise.
Good luck with the hunt. I'm extremely pleased with H&R blue lowering and Bilstein B8s, but this is for road use - for track there are big advantages with coilovers.
Im considering doing the following.
Stage 1.
Replacing all my bushings with Polybishings. (I have access to extremely cheap labor)
Stage 2.
Install Coilovers (Feal or Ceika or if I can get some PSS10 or Ohlins used)
Stage 3.
Eibach Sway bars and adjustable end links.
What do you guys think?
If I may be provocative:
Replacing worn out suspension components that are not performing as the manufacturer intended makes sense.
What doesn't make sense is taking a car that is handling well with some major upgrades such as shocks and springs, and then tweaking with all manner of bush/sway bar/whatever changes, which in detail will improve the handling, of course, but for the average track day jockey won't make a scrap of difference to the day's enjoyment except the satisfied knowledge that you've aced the setup.
Sure, put two highly competent racers in the car and the fractions of seconds difference it makes for such a driver makes a big difference in a race.
But for the average track day guy (i.e. most) the extra expense simply isn't worth it, beyond basic and useful upgrades of springs/shocks and maybe ride height.
Over the bar at the end of the day, it's a good conversation starter though....
I priced Power-Flex bushings for my car before I did the shocks/springs/top mounts/sways and drop- links... it was around $1k for all the bushings not counting labor (which I would do myself). If you haven't done suspension bushings before, you probably don't know what you're in for - getting the stock bushings out is usually pretty daunting.
I had the same question between M030 RoW and PSS10. At the end I decided to go with the M030 RoW last week and received it yesterday (pretty fast for an order coming from Europe, just a week lead time).
I ordered it from Carnewal (Gert) and paid 1190 euros (1100 for the kit and 90 for the shipping) which was cheaper than what the 1350 euros announced on the website.
I chose the M030 RoW kit because I want to keep a reasonable road clearance and dont want to spend too much time on finding the right set up. It is bolt on and I can get the car right where the factory fine tuned it. PSS10 are the best but if you dont know how to set them up or are not going to use all the settings ... whats the point.
Whatever you choose, both kits are Bilstein which is a pretty robust setting. I had 4 cars with Bilstein and never been disappointed (not like the one time I had Konis).
There are street coilovers and there are track coilovers . It's not all one or the other .
The factory gt3 and h&r street performance coilovers are great on the street , and probably a better choice if you are going to do the odd track day or de ,or just a more performance minded driver . These are only height adjustable
A track focused car will be best with a fully adjustable unit . Preload height & rebound
But if you just want to lower the car and tweak the performance slightly for spirited street use , row m030 , or a Koni, bilstein shock paired with eibach or h&r springs would be fine . And is about 500 bucks less than a street coilover .
The only determining factor is your budget and what you want out of the car performance wise
Most folks hardly get the full use out of the stock Set up , let alone an upgraded one.
Modifying cars is a very individual thing .
I wasn't content with the mo30 setup , but we put it in a friends car and he couldn't be happier . And I'm happy with my co, swaybars , polybushes , Wevo mounts and limited slip diff handling improvements .
This will cost you more because you'll have to go in 3 times .
If youre doing the bushes you might as well do it all at once because you have to completely disassemble the suspension to do the bushes .
If you've got it apart , it will be easier and better to put it back together with new components and set it up once .
What I did was buy the components as I could afford them , then when I had all the bits , we did it all at once .
I'm doing the same now with the exhaust , I've bought used fab speed headers and 200 cell cats , I'm saving up for a new switchable valvetronic mufflers . When I get all the bits , I'll swap it out .
Buying your components over time , if you aren't facing a break down and have the option , allows you to watch out for used stuff or sales deals .
For the record, Going the extra mile on suspension upgrades , it's worth it .
ROW 030 2002 and up, and $1695 for 2001 and older. What happened to these prices? Tariffs? Wow I got sticker shock when I just went to price out the ROW 030 option for my 2001 C2. Now it is going for $3695! Wow I'm late to the game it doesn't pay to procrastinate.......
Yup, the cat got out of the bag and some one noticed almost doubling the price.
I just got some FEAL Coil overs and waiting on lower control arms to arrive.
Looks like the price is doubling due to the kits no longer being manufactured according to other posts.
Considering the coil over option but like to have a complete system vs having to piecemeal a solution.if that makes sense? What I liked about the RoW solution was it was factory tuned for the chassis.
If I get coil overs which give more flexibility and price options, I'm not sure I would take advantage of all the adjustments available rebound\dampening. So this would put me in the HR StreetSports which are pre configured \ non adjustable rebound\dampening I would just have to set the height and then match a sway bar? Most of my driving is on streets with an occasional DE or AX so not looking to build a track car. I'm convinced most never drive the cars to what they are capable even on a track unless you have invested in allot of track time. IMHO
If I do coil overs will I have to get adjustable end links and what sway bar will you use with the coil overs? Are you using the stock bushings in the control arms or going to a poly?
thanks for the reply as this was an old thread.
If you're doing autocross consider what class the suspension mods will put you in. Over the summer I installed K-sport coilovers, Eibach sway bars front and rear and all new front end suspension components. The coilovers and sway bars put me A street prepared class. For PCA events there was no change.
My coilovers came with adjustable endlinks for the rear and used the original ones up front.
Yes, I just saw the same thing! I'm looking to do a complete suspension upgrade over the winter on my 2001 C2 Tiptronic. Currently leaning towards the H&R Street Performance coilovers and sway bars, along with end links and poly bushings.
If you want coil-overs, in addition to a toe-camber-caster alignment ($400?), figure on a corner balance for another $4-500? (No idea on costs for a Porsche, yet, my Spec Miata was $400 for everything). As said previously, the ROW M030 on my 996 is pretty nice and factory-balanced. Learn to control understeer with your entry points, (left-foot) braking, and right foot. To fine tune the balance for HPDE, just get an adjustable front and/or rear sway bar and play around with it. IMHO, coil-overs are for race cars where you want to fine-tune the suspension height and shock settings for different tracks and conditions to drop tenths of seconds off of you lap times. Money is better spent on a good coach.
The car has 102K miles 2001 C2 and to my knowledge the suspension has not been refreshed or had any components replaced. My goal is to refresh the suspension and get it "tight again" meaning at above 85 mph is where I notice the car is looser and doesn't feel as planted if that makes any sense since they aren't the most technical terms.....
Struts springs or Coil overs I'm not set either way just looking for the best value for the buck. As I will be replacing the bushings control arms and it's a "while your in there" might was well do it once and do it right.
Several people have advised me on the RoW M030 kit which I like the fact that it is factory tuned for the chassis but with the coil over options now being priced at or below the M030 option that becomes the dilemma..... I might just to do the control arms and see how it drives then decide on the M030 or Coil Overs to see how big a difference the bushings will make by themselves.
I figure 500 an alignment... but I might be off base or delusional living in NNJ...
Ah, welcome to the slippery slope of performance tuning...
I agree with the other comments on the M030 kit. It's self contained and will provide a huge upgrade in terms of on-track performance and feel. It will help with the limit understeer some, but it will still be there when you're pushing the car really hard. Pros: matched spring, damper, and roll bar rates. good value and contains "slippery slope" spending. still "streetable" for the majority of days for which you won't be on the track, could easily sell in the future if you decide you want to upgrade to a fully adjustable suspension. Cons: no ARB adjustment, no damping rate adjustment, no ride height adjustment.
If you decide to do it piecemeal, then the biggest single opportunity for improvement will be a set of aftermarket coilovers and things start to get a bit more complicated decision-wise from there.
"Wake up thread".....I'm considering BC coil overs for my 02 C4S. Not a DD nor do I plan on taking to the track anytime soon. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
