I just need to set aside another $1,200 for tires as I expect my old ones to get roasted pretty quick when I get my 4.0L back from Jake.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All - I think I'm going to postpone 996 ownership until I can either rebuild an engine myself or purchase oen that's been rebuilt with a number of the weak points addressed. Ideally I'd like an FSI engine in a C4s. I came across a builder in Germany that may be a viable solution. Has anyone heard of Car Design Pruefer or CDP? I beleive the owner/builder is either Stefan or Rolf, I'm not sure as I've reveived emails from both. THe website it https://car-design-pruefer.com/ . They offer a complete rebuild for about $10K and claim to use Mahle cylinders. That's all I know for now. Anyone else hear of them or speak German?

POST 2Original post

Why do you want to send it to all the way to Germany? Just because a shop is in Germany doesn't mean they are better than what you can find here.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16522643

I wouldn't - you can buy an engine from them and have it shipped for about $250.

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 16522971

They don't have a core charge? How does the warranty work when something goes sideways?

POST 5Original post

Not sure where you are but Ill be dropping of my C4S in June for an FSI 4.0L to be delivered around Oct. if youre anywhere near the Bay Area, be happy to give you a test drive so you can decide if thats what you wanna do with yours.

Bash Hat - what you are doing is my dream. I just don't have the $25-$30K to do that. I'm down on the Central Coast but have family in the East Bay so I'd love to take you up on your offer. Thank you.

Base FSI built 3.8 is about $22Kish (edited)...Start saving you won't regret it if you plan on keeping this car long term!

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16528253

That's the plan. Unless I decide to test myself and rebuild one following FSI's instruction videos.

This is no longer true. Per one of Jake's posts on my engine rebuild comparison thread, they are phasing out their "Stocker" motor. Their cheapest offering as of last summer was the Street Performer for $22k and I think Jake commented that prices were likely going up as parts got more expensive. @Jengah If you're considering a rebuild, you should check out my thread and attached spreadsheet comparing some of the more popular options: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...bs-vertex.html

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 16529639

22K is where we start these days. That buys a Stage 1 Street Performer. Prices are not going down, they never will. The engines are getting stronger, as we develop, and apply. Every engine is up significantly over 2019 when it comes to output.

One would think I'd know this since I just put a deposit down...I was looking at some old notes and got confused, those are now in the trash! I need to stay off the internet before I wake up!

Jengah, my $0.02. When youve decided to go all in with a rebuild done the right way, there really isnt much difference between $20k and $25k over the life of the car. The biggest savings is gonna be that youll do this once with a company like FSI, rather than trying to save a few bucks and having some shop throw a $10-$15k motor in and then having to spend another $20k down the line when it comes apart on you. I just need to set aside another $1,200 for tires as I expect my old ones to get roasted pretty quick when I get my 4.0L back from Jake. 😁
