I also installed 200TW Hankook RS3 v2’s in 235/35/18 and 265/30/18 sizes.

The engine was replaced around 40k miles and the trans rebuilt at 71k miles.

I also replaced the shocks and struts with new OE dampers and had it aligned.

It runs a little hot in traffic so I replaced the thermostat for a lower temp model and also noticed the low speed driver’s side fan doesn’t come on.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I imagine with the replacement engine, the bearing issue was solved...
In May I bought a 99 996 off of a guy on the RR-AX.com forum. It had 135k miles, some wear on front lip, a couple minor scratches, and some interior wear. The engine was replaced around 40k miles and the trans rebuilt at 71k miles. The car also had the optional LSD only available on the 99 (and the 40AE). Ive been an autocross guy, HPDE instructor, and W2W racer for 20 years, so what the heck! At the time I had a very nice 01 986S. While driving home I could feel more NHV from the 996 than the 986. I assumed it was the motor mounts (it turned out to be a bad dual mass flywheel).
So a couple weeks after buying it, I was doing the motor mounts and saw an oil drip between the trans and engine. Buying into the IMS/RMS hysteria, I ordered the Pelican Parts upgraded IMS kit and RMS. We pulled down the trans expecting to see an oily mess, but just clutch dust. The pic looks wet, but thats brake cleaner.
Next off was the clutch. I was hoping it would look ok and be reusable. Nope, it was pretty wasted. The dual mass flywheel looked glazed and felt weird. Theres usually a little play in a dual mass flywheel, but this one felt more than normal. Blake from Flat Six advised replacing it with another OE unit. The motor mounts looked ok when replacing them, so I realized the NVH was coming from a loose spring in this dual mass flywheel!
Next, both the RMS and IMS flange were dry. Not going to stop without replacing the the IMS bolt, bearing, and seal. This replacement engine was clearly a later factory version because it had the single row IMS bearing (made in Poland). Pulling the bearing and bolt, they was no play and everything looked kosher. The Pelican Parts IMS kit had a larger and stronger bolt and Im confident this one will last just as long (or longer) than the original. I suspect lower mileage engine are more likely to see failure than higher mileage, proven examples!
Now the original bearing sits on my desk as a paperweight!
nice! I imagine with the replacement engine, the bearing issue was solved... but hey peace of mind is worth every penny. It sounds like you got a great deal on a fun 911 to play with. Love the LSD in mine... one of the selling points of the 40AE when I was looking... but I also have an Ax background.
Yeah, the Boxster S was an open diff and annoying. Wasn't a huge deal in autox in the dry, but horrible in the wet. Only the inside rear would light up and modulation would give me wheel hop.
The 911 is special in the rain. It just puts down power!
To continue my ownership log:
I’m a long time motorsport and autox guy. I have a regular racecar and occasionally roadrace a specmiata, so this 996 was going to serve summer daily driving and occasional local autox duty only. It runs a little hot in traffic so I replaced the thermostat for a lower temp model and also noticed the low speed driver’s side fan doesn’t come on. I need to do the cooling fan hack. I also replaced the shocks and struts with new OE dampers and had it aligned. Zero front toe, 1/16” in per side on the rear. On the RF we got -1.0 of camber, but only -0.7 on the left. Better than nothing. I’m not worried about serious SCCA competition, but wanted to be able to run the new A Street class if I so choose. I also installed 200TW Hankook RS3 v2’s in 235/35/18 and 265/30/18 sizes. I ran an Audi club autox a week ago. The course was not typical, more of a point and shoot affair. The car felt great and I had fastest time of the day, but I wasn’t against top notch completion either. Yesterday I ran with Michiana BMW at Tire Rack. Had the fastest time with fenders FTWF :-)
It was nice just picking up my floor mat and cooler to drive home in air conditioned comfort! No trailer or changing tires needed!
To update the previous posts, it appears the oil drip was the valve cover and oil filler tube. So that’s up to fix next. It seems like teething pains, but hopefully I will have a nicely sorted 996 in the near future. It also proves there is no such thing as a cheap Porsche :-)
Nice. Looks like you're a very good driver. Are you able to drive your 996 at 9/10 or 10/10 and still feel confident? I could do that with my bimmers but I think I just need more seat time and/or better technique and advice when it comes to the 996. Hope to run into you one of these days. I would like to ride shotgun on one of your runs.
