Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Solenoid was replaced by dealer and codes cleared.
Leading evidence: 'Replace solenoid' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'bit less costly than a new actuator' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check solenoid' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
'course, neither replacing a DME or an actuator is cheap job but I think a new DME is probably a bit less costly than a new actuator.

Suggestion
Before you replace the actuator check the solenoid to be sure it is good.

Suggestion
Probably involves checking for a voltage at the connector when the DME is commanded to activate the solenoid, checking wiring continuity.

I would hope that the dealer service department staff, the service manager, the senior/lead tech, bas made some attempt to cover how the DME was flagged as needing replacing vs.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Variocam Solenoid Problem: Engine was running fine. CEL showed 1351 (cam sensor). Visual inspection revealed broken wires on drivers side cam solenoid. Solenoid was replaced by dealer and codes cleared. Engine runs terribly and code returns. Disconnect wires from solenoid and engine runs fine. They are stumped. Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
IIRC the error means VarioCam was activated but the expected cam timing change was not detected.
IOWs, the actuator didn't actuate.
Before you replace the actuator check the solenoid to be sure it is good. I'm not sure how this is done, but there ought to be something in the factory repair manual about this. Probably involves checking for a voltage at the connector when the DME is commanded to activate the solenoid, checking wiring continuity. I'd even go so far as to *carefully* give the DME a good looking over looking for possibly a scorched area that could be an electrical component that has failed on the DME system board. The DME output eventually activates the solenoid but the DME doesn't connect to this device directly. There is an intermediate circuit that handles the heavy lifting -- so to speak -- of supplying the voltage to the solenoid.
This eliminates a bad solenoid, a bad connector, bad wiring, even a bad DME.
If nothing is found amiss then it would appear to me the problem lies with the actuator.
Like Macster said, some tests need to be done to diagnose this one. Check out this thread, similar code in bank 2 (your code is for bank 1)

It's a bit easier if you have Durametric.
Well, I can't at this time argue with the dealer's diagnosis. I'm not t the car and even if I were I'm no trained professional Porsche tech.
