Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I happen to know someone who installed an OS Gilken LSD in his G96, but he's been permabanned so can't answer these questions.
Leading evidence: 'Install os gilken lsd in his g96' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install os gilken lsd in his g96' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I always use new bearings to do the set up because with them you'll get usable measurements that broken-in bearings won't give you.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am looking for information, dimensions or a tool to do the installation of a LSD differential in my 2001 g96 6 speed. I have full machining capabilities and access to 3D printing. I have extensive mechanical abilities and have done successful differential and transmission repairs. I believe the tool is VW 521/4 for measuring backlash.
Any information or video links would be greatly appreciated.
Its a rarely talked about subject and the guys that usually set up the diffs know people and can borrow the tool from a dealer or shop. I would love to get my hands on an economic version of the tool too.
Sorry i cant be more help.
Hi Rocco, installing your LSD requires re-establishing bearing preload on the differential carrier bearings and ring-to-pinion backlash. I always use new bearings to do the set up because with them you'll get usable measurements that broken-in bearings won't give you.
The work can be done using the same factory tools (or equivalents) as described in the workshop manual for G50 family transmissions. I look for 3 - 4 Nm turning torque. The desired backlash is marked on the ring gear, and I measure it with the VW388 tool at 80 mm. (Porsche's suggestion that one measure freeplay of the differential between its bearings with 2 x 1.50 mm shims installed, then add fixed preload, is rubbish -- don't do it that way.)
Procedure is to first get the preload in range without the ring gear mounted (unless you are entirely disassembling the transmission), S1 + S2. Then mount the ring gear and move shims between S1 and S2 to get the desired backlash. Good luck with the project!
about 100 years ago I bought a rebuilt box from Vertex and when something went bad, they did not step up to fix it. So, now I learned how to fix it myself. No more Vertex.
