Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check filter and found some debris' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check filter and found some debris' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion · Original poster
I did on my so merc, but that filter was filled with so much dirt, I wasn't going to find jack in that.

Suggestion
No, you should not expect to see metallic debris with every filter change, ESPECIALLY with just 3K miles on the oil.

Suggestion
A relatively low millage machine such as yours, with a quick (3000 mile) oil change, I would expect to be very clean.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I posted this question on the 997 forum, but didn't get enough info there.
So I thought I would post the same question here. There's too much in common in the 996 and 997.1 engines that I thought maybe you guys would have a little more insight.
I can get a pick, but this is more of a question.
First, I changed my oil(Motul 8100xcess 5w-40) over the weekend and it had about 3000 miles on it. I checked the filter and found some debris. Some seemed to stick to a magnet and others didn't. I found more than I was thinking I'd find, but not enough to make me stop driving the car. The car has 48000 miles on it now.
This is the first time I have opened up a filter on my car. I did on my so merc, but that filter was filled with so much dirt, I wasn't going to find jack in that. It for sure went too long, so I'm not going to let her do that again.
I am sending off a sample to Black-stone labs, but it makes me wonder if most of you find debris in your oil filter and how much is normal?
Mike
A small amount of debris is probably OK, it depends on how much and of what type. There is some non-metallic material that is left over from the manufacturing process that will find its way into the oil filter and is of no concern. Any ferrous material is obviously a cause for concern but again depending on quantity. A small amount of ferrous material can also be fine, I've yet to find a motor over 100k miles that doesn't shed at least a small amount of shiny bits into the oil. A relatively low millage machine such as yours, with a quick (3000 mile) oil change, I would expect to be very clean. But again, 1 or 2 bits is probably not an issue.
It's more than 1 or 2 bits, that's why I have posted the question. However, it's not so much that I decided to stop driving the car either. If I thought it was crazy, I would stop and take it to the shop or drop the sump plate.
I've done a lot of searches on this and there has been all kinds of answers, from if you find any, stop driving the car to the filter is doing it's job, which is the case.
I guess what I'm really trying to figure out here is those that do this(cut the filter and take a look) on a regular basis, should I expect some all of the time? And should I expect 1 or 2 or a few to half a dozen or more in a somewhat "healthy" engine.
Thanks!
No, you should not expect to see metallic debris with every filter change, ESPECIALLY with just 3K miles on the oil.
One reason you may not have gotten as much feedback as you were hoping for is the lack of useful detail in your post. Indicating that you found some stuff, some of which is ferrous, is really lacking. "I found approx. 20 pieces of metal, roughly the size of sand grains, about half of which were magnetic" would at least give people some way to visualize what you're describing. What color was the non-ferrous material? What shape were the pieces? How much total debris are we discussing?
Anytime you find excessive debris in your oil filter (which it sounds like you did) the next step is to remove the oil sump cover pan to look for debris there & in the oil sump pickup screen. Often excess engine assembly sealant gets sucked into the pickup screen, blocking oil flow to the engine, & causing excessive wear. Buy a LN magnetic oil drain plug to install in the pan.
Well, I took some pics, but you hardly see the small specs, about the size of sand and you really have to look for it to see them.
I did take the filter to a Mechanic I know and he said the filter looked good to him.
Before I get to stupid with taking it to the dealer and all of that stuff, I'm going to wait on my analysis from Blackstone labs.
Thanks for the info!
Mike
