Unless the suspected bad converter is relatively new I'd replace both.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My driver side Cat is gone, causing CELs and rattling something terrible. I'm planning on replacing it myself with a DEC direct fit. It appears that it might be an easier process if the passenger Cat is out of the way. So, does it make sense to spring the extra $350 or so for the passenger Cat and do both at the same time, or save the $$ for something else, even if it means a bit more work. Opinions and advice are welcome! Thanks! John

Murphys law. As soon as you change one the other will go. Easy for me to spend your money though.

Unless the suspected bad converter is relatively new I'd replace both. FWIW, I recently broke down and dealt with a rattly converter on my Boxster. I bought two used converters from a salvage facility. Before purchasing I gave both the shake test and both were quiet. I had the Porsche dealer tech install the used converters and the "new" converters are quiet -- it was an eye opener to realize how much noise the noisy converter was making as soon as I had a quiet converter on the car -- and the P0430 error code has not reappeared. The engine feels stronger but this may be my imagination. What is not my imagination is the engine is running very well.
