Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

For some reason the new IMS used a weaker IMS bearing with a single row bearing instead of the previous dual row bearing.

my question is: is it enough to replace the IMS shaft with the appropriate sprockets and the drive chain, or are there any other small differences that should be taken into consideration?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

does anyone know what are the differences between early and late IMS drive sprockets I've found a crank that is in good condition however it has the early style twinchain sprockets, as my engine has the single row sprocket with that rather odd looking toothed chain. my question is: is it enough to replace the IMS shaft with the appropriate sprockets and the drive chain, or are there any other small differences that should be taken into consideration? 3,4 M96 (year 2001 engine) donor crank from 1999 3,4 M96 also std/std late style crank is welcome if someone has one laying around without spun bearings thank you (yup just noticed I misspelled the headline )

POST 2Original post

I would PM user "Flat6 Innovations". He could probably answer that.

POST 3Original post

The improved gear drive crankshaft was introduced in 2001. This required a new chain & IMS also. For some reason the new IMS used a weaker IMS bearing with a single row bearing instead of the previous dual row bearing.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks very useful replies. I have almost completed a deal with one of the renlisters, so probably will go this route + new chains and new shells of course
