Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For a limited time - I can offer lefthanded variocam tension relief tools. See below where it is used. You'll need this to replace the cam-to-cam drive chain, the wear pads or general cam service. Note: some units use righthanded threads. And I am fairly sure this is only applicable to 5-chain M96 engines. Reply here or PM me. I figure $10 per kit is fair. I'll take care of shipping (within reason). If there are no requests by mid-May, the offer will end.

POST 2Original post

Fair indeed! It should be noted however that not all vario-cam tensioners use the left handed thread...Porsche must have made that change in an attempt to sell "special tools"... Mine was right handed, and I used a Bicycle quick release front axle (which obviously uses a M5 threaded rod) to make my tool (picked it up at a local bike shop for "nuffin' ")...

Yes - it is specifically noted in my post that some units use righthanded threads. So it makes sense to check first. Who would be willing to take a $10 gamble, in these times?

As usual with Porsche owners," the flash gets the cash " !! lol

POST 6Original post

I'll buy one !! I actually had several of the Porsche Factory 9632 and 9632/1 tools in my tools box before I retired . They come installed with the new $1000 actuators. But before I could pick up my tool box from the shop, the service manager went through it and got any Porsche special tools out thinking they were shop owned (some were, some were not)..I didn't notice them missing for over 2 years !! lol

Pics, or it didn't happen. I'm just trying to spread the joy. Funny. Not just the real-life experience, but that you would have to pay for one of these precious devices. I need to send a package your way.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 16585738

Yea, that Service Manager was a real dick, I went through 7 Service Managers in my 10 year stint at that Porsche Dealership, most were great. No hurry on the package delivery, my Cam deviations are good and my RMS doesn't leak !!

POST 13Original post

I have two of these collecting dust in my tool box. Three if you count the one attached to the bank 2 actuator still in the bag. I did not know they are worth money.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16586959

They're not worth much - but when you need one.... you need one.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16586093

Amazing what difference a boss makes. You can have a great job, but if you have a dick for a boss, the job sucks. I left a good job at Nissan for that reason. I've been lucky since then. Good bosses and a good job. I will get around to shipping things out in a few days. I don't go out much right now, so I need to plan my trips better than before.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wow. I'm surprised at the interest. I just made up five of them - that's the limit on the number of nuts I ordered. I can make two more by robbing from Peter, to pay Paul. The first five are spoken for. I think all have posted here - so no mystery guests. I'll round up some simple shippers and get them out soon. Edit: shippers are due to me around May 7th. Then I need to send them out. If anyone needs quicker service, let me know. I'll see what I can do to expedite. I did the best I could to clean the treads at the insertion end. I ran the double nuts up from that end. Even with that, it may take a little messing to be insure engagement.

POST 20Original post

I still have the left handed die I bought to make a set of these tools back in 2009 when I took my engine apart to fix an intermix. Probably have the tools around someplace too! I made a couple of sets for other owners back then and it is nice to see someone helping with the need for such tools!

POST 21Original post

I just used a long wood deck screw. Yes, it isn't the right tool for it but figured it will only be used once in the life of this engine.

POST 23Original post

As an alternative, it is easy enough to re-thread the pointless left hand thread in the variocam to right hand. That's what I did, then any 80mm long m5 bolt will work. Note i used a nut on the end just in case there wasn't enough metal left to hold tension, but it was fine.

POST 24Original post

Total shot in the dark here since this thread is 2 years old - I need one of these and they seem hard to come by. Any chance you still have these for sale?

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 18366932

i did not read the whole thread Do u just need the left hand threaded rod and the nuts? I have some left over and can send 1.

POST 26Original post

Good question, Im down a rabbit hole of research into this on what I need and how its supposed to work, and Im not sure I need a left threaded one. I have a 1999 with the original 3.4, so it could be right handed? Also, Id love to know how you guys figure out the threading specifications on stuff like this. Doesnt seem to be out in the open like the Bentley manual.

POST 27Original post

Well i have rh and lh stuff as i could not find that answer either. I just ordered 2ft of each online. Im pretty sure i know where the stuff is. I can send i 1 of each. Thats all u need as i would only do 1 side at a time

POST 28Original post

Originally Porsche used left hand threads and black solenoids on bank 1, and right hand threads and gray solenoids on bank 2 ... Later on they used right hand threads on all of them and silver solenoids on all of them,,,, go figure... When you get ready to put the vario-cam actuators back in make sure to check the "part number" or "Zyl1-3 " Zyl4-6" on the actuator its self to make sure you put them on the correct bank.... The color coded solenoids are listed in some old shop manuals as bank reference, and they are not always correct !!....

POST 29Original post

If anyone had one of these for sale I am interested. Please let me know. Thanks, Mike
