Suggestion

I would start by disconnecting the wire that goes from the Omron relay (pin 11) from the fan relay (85) and test it with a test light or voltmeter.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking for some advice installing a latching relay to run both radiator fans. I followed Rick's post from the 986 forum http://986forum.com/forums/diy-proje...em-switch.html . I purchased a Omron MY2K-US-DC12 relay and also an extra 996 defroster switch to give it that oem look once working. So I followed the direction Rick3000 lists in the link above but both fan start immediately after turning the ignition key to the first position. The switch LED works but the switch doesn't turn on or off the fans. I'm using the phone connector to provide the 12v+ switched power to pin 4 on the switch and switch pin 5 and relay pin 5 are connected. Also pin 3 from the cars actual defroster switch is used to provide the required LED neg/ground. Also all the grounds pins 8, 9, 10 and 13 are connected to the phone connectors brown ground wire. So I'm puzzled at why the switch isn't controlling the circuit/fans. I did remove and test the switch with another relay and it works. Below is the part of the directions I've followed. if anyone has any ideas on how to resolve my issues please let me know. The car is a MY99 C2. . Switch Pin 1 - Relay Pin 14 Switch Pin 2 - Relay Pin 12 Switch Pin 3 - Illumination Power from dash Defroster Switch Pin 3 Switch Pin 4 - 12V Switched Power from Phone Connector Switch Pin 5 - Relay Pin 5 Relay Pin 9, 10, 11, 13 - Ground (I used the Phone Connector Ground) Relay Pin 11 - Pin 85 Wire Relay Pin 1 & 4 are not used

POST 2Original post

is it possible that you are testing it with the AC on?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I did catch that at first, but I recall turning it off and the fans still started immediately upon turning the key. I will test again this evening before i over troubleshoot something that doesn't exist.

POST 4Original post

Maybe this will help: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...ling-fans.html

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Jim for the link. meirschwartz, I did try the setup last evening ensuring that the A/C was off, and still immediately after turning the key the high speed fans energized.

POST 6Original post

sounds like 8 and 11 connected and relay is not unlatching .

POST 7Original post

I would start by disconnecting the wire that goes from the Omron relay (pin 11) from the fan relay (85) and test it with a test light or voltmeter. first, make sure your switch and relay combination is working fine. if you say that the light on the switch turns on and off, it indicates that the Omron is working as it should.

POST 8Original post

The approach OP is going with is the cleaner OEM look, but the location used in jim010's link is the perfect size for a toggle switch which you can wire to the relays directly, its a good/cheap alternative and gives you the fun of having a throwable switch. You do need some kind of backing plate to hold the switch in place, I 3d printed something for it, have been wanting to do a full switch setup like OP is going for to fill in one of the blanks on the dash but just can't get the motivation up to replace something which works ok.
