Again the only thing that seemed like it might be off was that the barb that connects to the track drain seems like it might be a little loose (or the hose slides on the barb a little), Maybe it comes out of there when filling oil?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My alternator went out and after removal I found a bit of oil pooled on the top of the engine behind the alternator. Anyone seen this before or have any idea what may cause this? I cant really determine where this came from as it is not obvious since nothing else appears to be wet and I do not see how the oil may have jumped from one web to the other. The car was sitting for more than a few weeks before I got around to it and the oil was pretty clean so maybe that has something to do with not seeing what is leaking. The shortblock is a brand new factory replacement and I have only had one oil change so far. My mechanic is extremely detail oriented and I am quite sure we replaced all seals and o-rings but stuff happens. It has an Ultimate AOS Extreme with the track drain. If people are wondering what the hose is. Is the connection point (barb) on the oil fill tube supposed to be a little loose? I cant see how the oil would get down across the top of the engine but I can slide the barb in and out a little. It seems dry though.

POST 2Original post

The person who filled the car with oil may have spilled some. Or, the oil filler tube has a crack and it's spilling on the engine. Not fatal, just messy.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I changed the oil. I guess anything is possible but I thought I was being pretty careful with pouring it into the oil fill tube but it was pretty late. Ill see if I can see any damage to the oil fill tube. It really was not a lot of oil and it cleaned up as good as new by blotting it with a couple shop towels. Again the only thing that seemed like it might be off was that the barb that connects to the track drain seems like it might be a little loose (or the hose slides on the barb a little), Maybe it comes out of there when filling oil? I am not terribly concerned but I would like to keep things clean.

POST 4Original post

OP - You could have a filler tube o-ring issue. Did you check the other side behind the throttle body for oil on top? Oil cooler o-rings or a couple of oil/breather hoses that run across the top of the engine to oil cooler and cylinders 4-6 to the AOS? My two bits…

POST 5Original post

Just an observation, but the starter alternator cable (some call it the Y cable for obvious reasons) I see here looks old and when it corrodes, it can look like you have a bad alternator, when its really the cable. You can tell if it's an issue if when you start the car the voltmeter on the dash sits closer to 13 than 14 V. With a new alternator, battery and starter alternator cable, on startup, my voltmeter is at ~14.2V. When warn and all the fans turn on, it drops to ~13.8V. As aside, I was at Lime Rock today behind a GT2. I had a very hard time keeping up with that!

Ill do a little more investigation. The oil cooler was still shiny and new as in brand new with no oil on it. The top of the engine to the right or the webbing with the oil looked clean as well with no residue that I could see. Again, I will look closer. I was actually wondering if it could be the dipstick tube but again I am not sure how the oil would travel so far from that point. Even the oil fill tube seems odd to have oil travel into those pockets like that.

POST 7Original post

Maybe power steering fluid. Take a look at the hard pipe going into the back of the reservoir and where the reservoir connects to the pump. Mine was leaking from the res/pump connection and filled up the pockets on the bank2 side. Good luck.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 18921084

I had been looking into that. I did not notice that the voltmeter was low. In fact I think I remember it hovering around 14 volts. It did not seem to struggle with starting which seems to be a common symptom. One minute everything was working and then all of sudden the battery light came on as I was accelerating. I got to the store and came out and it started right up and I drove it home. Voltage went down from around 12v to 10v as I would expect for a car running on battery while driving. When I got home I could smell a faint smell of what smelled like electrical burning from the alternator area.

pretty sure it was engine oil but I will check that too

POST 10Original post

Check the "banjo fitting and banjo bolt" attachment at the bottom of the Accumulator.. If you have the thick white nylon spacer, the wide flange must go to the top next to the accumulator..If the wide flange is at the bottom against the banjo fitting it will interfere with the metal hose clamp and not seal properly against the banjo fitting even when properly torqued.. The Uniseal and connector at the oil fill tube looks very dry and doesn't appear to be leaking and is rated for 145 psi pressure, but there has been a couple of cases where the Uniseal actually "spilt" on a sharp edge of plastic from the drilled hole in the oil fill tube, but this doesn't seem to be a case of that...

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 18921121

If there is still residue remaining, smell the oil on your finger. PAS fluid and engine oil have distinctly different smells.

POST 12Original post

The Y cable is it. There are two wires, one from the alternator to the starter and another that connects to the batter. Where they are crimped together there is no protection from the elements. When it corrodes, it creates some resistance to the flow of current and as the car draws more power when the fans come on to cool the engine and the radiator, it creates a voltage drop across the corroded area which then heats up substantially, enough to melt the insulation on the cable. Part number is 996-607-019-01. Porsche has made a small attempt to protect the connection from the elements in the replacement cable. I had the same voltage meter scare and a local indy said I needed both battery and alternator, which I replaced, but didn't solve the problem. Replaced the Y cable and the old one had melted insulation while the new one solved the problem. Needlessly replaced the battery and alternator.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 18921154

the banjo bolt appeared dry. I cant really tell for sure but I think it is the barb going into the oil fill tube. It seems the hose is loose on that as I can slide either the hose or the barb in and out a little. The hose on the banjo bolt doesnt budge. All oil appears to be below this point, nothing from above but I do not know if this is actually it. There is oil around the base of the dipstick tube as well but somehow the oil traveled throughout that whole side.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 18921171

pretty sure it is engine oil, doesnt smell like much. edit: The pic above has me rethinking this? It sure looked similar in color but I had recently done my first oil change and I am used to power steering fluid having a more distinct odor. This stuff didnt smell like anything different. Ill look even closer.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Would the y-cable make the alternator stop charging? I thought the symptoms were hard starts especially when warm. I am not experiencing that. Car warm or cool did not get a charge after it stopped working and seemed to start fine.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 18925249

That engine case is so very clean !! Is that a new engine ? The Banjo and Banjo bolt are for sure dry, and the Uniseal looks to be dry as well. If it were leaking you would think there would be some oil residue in the small crosswebbing just under the Uniseal.. At any rate, if it turns out to be Track Drain or Uniseal that is leaking it has a "2 Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty"" on it...

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah it is a new factory shortblock. I unfortunately spun a rod bearing on the 4.0 with all the goodies (Nickies, JE pistons, carillo rods, deep sump and Accusump) days after I bought it so I shelved that engine for a future rebuild hoping the crank is not toast and went the cheaper and quicker route with my local Porsche parts guy. You and I talked about the UIDS before but I hadnt even had an oil change to get an oil analysis done yet and that was a prerequisite. With losing the prior engine after all the right mods to address all the common weak points and dropping the Accusump from the equation I still watch that thread closely for updates and results as it is an intriguing solution. Anyways, I think the engine being new is actually making it harder to find the source. It was sitting for over a month too. Everything probably drained down to those pockets and now I cant tell where it originated. The only things that are wet are near where I would have been wiping the fluid off of.

Looks similar in color to what I was seeing though I am seeing it on bank 1, Ill investigate even further when I have a little better light. I was searching all around and couldnt find the source.
