Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I ran M1 for a few years before switching to Motul mainly because my car always ran M1 over its lifetime.
Leading evidence: 'Run m1' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect steering linkage' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I ran a moisture test on my brake fluid and it came back having water in it.

I have tracked my car with both (I used 15-50 M1 in the summer on the track) and 5-40 Motul on the track.

Also inspect steering linkage for loose feeling and suspension for worn bushings.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As some might know, I recently bought a 2001 996 with just over 100k miles on it. Car was clean and well maintained but I always like to perform the basics on any car that I purchase so that I have a good starting point. I knew the engine mounts were bad (I just didn't know how bad) and decided to change the air filter and oil at the same time. Replacing the engine mounts was a piece of cake, probably some of the easiest engine mounts of any car I've ever worked on. I think I spent more time cleaning up after the oil change.
Ready to start
You can clearly see how bad the original engine mounts were. Old on the left and new on the right. The old mounts were so bad that you could freely move it and it was leaking fluid all over.
This isn't engine oil, this was the fluid from the old engine mount.
Old oil filter looked good, no real trace of metal shavings or plastic pieces. Two things to watch out for from what I've been reading.
My 996 is at 108k and oil change due very soon. Want to make a switch from Mobil 1 with all this recent talk about Motul or Driven oil, how did you decide on Liqui Moly?
I'm of the believe that most modern synthetics are fine as long as you change your oil regularly. The reason for using Liqui Moly is that I have had great results with it in all of my VW and Audi big turbo builds. The EA113 in the Mk5 GTI was notorious for cam follower issues, I never had the issue with Liqui Moly. The earlier EA888 in the latter GTI's and also all the other VW/Audi products was known to have chain tensioners that went bad, I also never had the tensioner issue and I currently have great results with Liqui Moly in my Golf R and my wife's Q7 (3.0T) according to Blackstone Labs.
I might have gotten lucky or it's due to the fact that I never go beyond 5k miles on oil changes and not the actual oil but Liqui Moly oil has treated my cars well for close to 20 years so that's why I decided to use it in the 911.
I ran M1 for a few years before switching to Motul mainly because my car always ran M1 over its lifetime. For a street car, if you change the oil every 5-6,000 miles or every 12 months, you should be fine with M1. It does have some thinning over time and behaves like a 30-35w, but I wouldnt worry if your hot idle pressure is 0.75bar or above (mine is always at least 1bar at 675RPM).
I switched to hope to address a cold start rattle, but that change didnt make any difference.
I have tracked my car with both (I used 15-50 M1 in the summer on the track) and 5-40 Motul on the track. Both were fine. There are arguably better oils out there and people tend to use what their Indy recommends. If an engine builder who rebuilt the engine recommends a brand/type, Id go with their recommendation.
I did the same maintenance on my car when I got it at the end of 2016. These cars are really wonderful to work on. Porsche thought through the reverse assembly and maintenance procedures, and they use high quality parts in most cases.
A lot of folks spend a lot of time on preventative maintenance. Im iffy on many of these items, especially if they are going to cost thousands at an Indy. If, however, working on the car is fun for you, then by all means, changing out old parts that havent failed yet (like coils) results in pride of keeping your car in great shape.
Note: oil changes and sagging/leaking motor mounts are not preventative, those are needed. I just mean things like hoses, brake lines, fuel pumps, radiators, etc.
Yes, I'm planning on removing the front bumper in the next few weeks to 1) clean out all the potential debris and 2) get it painted to take care of rock chips and install a clear bra (once paint is cured).
I have a carrera with 102K miles. I ran a moisture test on my brake fluid and it came back having water in it. So a brake flush should be considered as well. Also inspect steering linkage for loose feeling and suspension for worn bushings. All DIY.
Cool, thanks! It's been a busy summer for us. Along with the Carrera, I have the Turbo S now and that needs some love too. I just taught myself how to repair leather, using an airbrush, and will be dropping that video soon. Also have to replace the low-pressure refrigerant line for the A/C on the Carrera; then I can have it wrapped. Oh and this heatwave is trashing the stock PPF on the headlights too so that has to be addressed.
