Heck even a decent 360 is around that range and not much more to run than a GT/Turbo.

Suggestion

I see people commenting about getting a GT3 ($??) or 996 Turbo ($60K), whereas i do see some fairly well used 996's for under 80k, i think 80k is the new benchmark for the exceptional good cars...and a GT3 is more in the 100k region..if you can find one for sale.at least the type of cars that i would want.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have owned a 99 Cab for 4 years. I love driving it and everything about it. Am I crazy to upgrade to a 996 Turbo or even a 997? I understand the cost difference, but am thinking of making the change.

POST 2Original post

Size increase is substantial I own a 99 996 aero and just bought a 11 Turbo S size and ride was very different I still think the 996 aero is the best water cooled 911 ever

POST 3Original post

I think you'd be crazy not to upgrade to a 996 Turbo. For the 997, are you also talking Turbo?

POST 4Original post

I have owned and tracked practically every 996 variant, several of each actually. I like the 996 Carrera quite a bit, and would consider staying there. I have quite a bit of track and street time in various 997 and 991s as well. If you're making the change, go for a 997.2.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I hadn't even thought of the 997 Turbo. I was trying to keep my spend under 80k

Have you considered any other cars? That budget is putting you firmly in to Audi R8 territory.

POST 9Original post

Should be able to get a real nice 996 Turbo Cab in the 60's.

POST 10Original post

The 997.2 turbo S is numb but a velocity rocket I have more driving pleasure from my 996

POST 11Original post

For 80k I'd be thinking 996 GT3 / 997 Turbo / Audi R8 / Evora 400-- all with drivers miles. Your 99 is good but the rest are worlds apart, just depends on what you want. Heck even a decent 360 is around that range and not much more to run than a GT/Turbo.

There are a LOT of other possibilities, too, and one I would highlight is a C8 Corvette. A brand new one can be had for that price.

POST 13Original post

If you can swing it then keep ,both . I have an 04 996 c2 and 03’ 996 tt and love each for their own personalities and behavior. Taking a blast on the turbo still brings ear to ear grin anytime I am in it. The sound of the NA motor with pse on the c2 is a whole different kind of experience and much more nimble. If I had to keep 9ne it would be the turbo though.

POST 15Original post

The 996 Turbo is quite the car for the money...I have both a C2 and a Turbo and I like both for different reasons. Upgrading to a GT3 is also an option, and kind of in between. You get the Mezger, and the NA revs. Depends how you want to drive the car. The Turbo is an amazing cruiser and can be very refined, whereas the GT3 is more raw.

True The 996 GT3 is now $100K for a decent (not great) example. But I still think they are a bargain considering the low production numbers.

POST 17Original post

I have been there. Years ago I contemplated a 996 Turbo upgrade or upgrade to 997 Turbo. After a few 997 Turbo sellers flaking (literally flaking at the day of sale, when I had cash in hand!), I decided to say 'F this budget' and added a little more and picked up a 997 RS, privately, through a friend (this is a whole 'nother story). This deal happened right before the Porsche price blow up, so I got incredibly lucky. The plan was to get the RS and then sell the 996. Wifey said keep it, because she loves it. So Here I am with both a 996 and 997. If you can do both, do both.

POST 19Original post

I would not go to a 997. Its a marginal difference to a 996. But a turbo is a significant difference. I would drive the turbo and then make a decision. Both a 996tt and a 997tt. You could also try a base 992.

POST 20Original post

As permitted, I would just try to start driving some of the cars you're interested in and see which one speaks to you more. Do you want pure speed or more of a NA driving experience? Something more raw or buttoned up and comfortable? All these things add up. FWIW, a friend of mine that is in a pretty good financial situation drove a base 992 and then my 40AE a few days later and enjoyed the 996 much more. Right now he's deciding between a 996 40AE and a 997.2. Potentially a GTS.
