Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Greetings! First time on this part of Rennlist. I was wondering if anyone here knows if a 996.2 soft top assembly glass rear window, accordion frame, and all can retrofit onto a 996.1 car which had plastic rear window on the soft top? Will the 02' assembly install onto my 99'? I want an oem top with the zipper glass window. I've looked into aftermarket and before going that rout wish to exhaust this option through this forums members expertise if possible. Thanks so much in advance for any practical info on this post!

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has anyone installed the entire assembly from a 2002 cabriolet soft top onto a 1999-2001 cabriolet? Anyone? Bueller??

POST 3Original post

If it were possible wouldn't it be $$$ more than aftermarket? A new Porsche one is at least $5k according to the service manager at my local dealer and a used one is likely to look worn, no?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11224242

Not necessarily, I can find Used 02 tops in nice shape for a reasonable price and they are made better than my 99 top. They last longer. The earlier tops are notorious for problems with the glue separating, and when they modified the accordion frame they added a center support for the heavier zip in glass window. It is the only difference. I was hoping someone could tell me if the tops whole assembly mount the same on the car? I know the soft canvas tops are made differently for the assemblies are made different as the newer version must support the glass... But do they Mount onto the car the same way?

POST 5Original post

I am told the mechanism is different - so I doubt it would work. Otherwise the aftermarket top companies would sell the same top for both Mk1 and Mk2 cars, but they clearly don't.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi the tops are different and the mechanisms are different but is the way the frame mounts to the car different? Can you advise me who you spoke to so I may discuss the extent of their knowledge on the subject please? Pm would be fantastic. Thanks so much!!

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've learned the roof struts are different, the restraining straps are different and there is an extra bow above the glass for support. I simply want to know if I find an 02 top as shown complete, will it install onto my 99 car? Please enlighten me with a "yes" or "no" "because..." Some detailed explanation would be fantastic. I would really appreciate it. Thanks everyone!

POST 8Original post

Buy it and put it on. Let us know how it goes. Find a shop that does top replacement and ask their opinion.

Lol my buddy is a gold certified mechanic at a dealership I've asked everyone but the Dalai Lama himself! No one knows I asked Porsche, they said "we aren't going to waist our time on this sorry" wording it much nicer of course.

POST 10Original post

Take a look in the PET program and compare the parts related to the top. I think there are more parts that would need to be replaced than just the top assembly itself. I know I started to look at this once. If you would like to look at this I can provide you with a searchable copy of PET.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11246355

D that would be fantastic! Please do! I can't believe no one knows or tried this option. I don't want to buy a top that I can't use and have to buy another one soon after. It makes most sense to find the answer first. Especially when Porsche got it right 2 years after my car was introduced. Many thanks for your offer and help!

POST 13Original post

here's my car. 2001 C4 I bought this on ebay in 2012. I debated going the route of a new top with a plastic window or even simply replacing my old delaminating window. I can see out of the rearview mirror with ease. This is the glass model with new top. Had a local guy in toronto do it. It took him about half a day. I am extremely happy with my decision. Clean and fresh. I couldn't be happier.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 11247156

Looks great but you DID NOT buy a 996 Mk2 top and put it on a Mk1. Looks like an aftermarket top with a glass window. (Can you share where you bought it from and who makes it?) The original poster has a mk2 top and is wondering if it fits on a Mk1. I have to believe it won't. Otherwise even the aftermarket guys would just be selling the same top to both Mk1 and Mk2 owners.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks roadsession! I was being cordial as replies are few and far between. People are frugal and I think the reason aftermarket companies split production of the tops is because few would buy more than the canvas when the time comes to replace. Ebay is selling tops for 5-600$ Reputable aftermarket companies are between 1-2k for tops if they offered the assembly they would be 2-3500k probably and see no action as they are stepping into oem realm at that price. Sfladismantler says it would work/ ladismantaler also believes it would work. None can confirm with an explanation why. I appreciate you clarifying my question. The car was made identical for 6 years in so many ways. I find it hard to believe they reconfigured the mounting the assembly it installs to. It makes more sense to me they changed a few parts and not the shell's assembly of the car. I really don't want a small glass window or a plastic window. I want a zipper window big hearty and heatable, so when it goes I just replace the window an enjoy! Astounded no one else tried to accomplish this... Any input always welcome!

POST 17Original post

My top is an aftermarket mk1. I found it on ebay but eventually purchased it privately through the company. I think the name was autotopfactory in California. I could pick the colour. They gave me options from the 2012 grey colour to the original colour used in 2001. All seams are heat sealer and stiched! So no delamination. The reason the 2002 top won't fit is because the glass doesnt doesn't fold The compartment is smaller on the 99-01, hence the smaller glass piece in the needed in the aftermarket version. The quality of the top is great. I don't notice any difference between the oem. I paid about 579 (us dollars) plus shipping and duties. It may have taken a week or two to get made. Really made a huge difference in appearance and still makes me happy with my decision.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11247877

Hi thanks for the note! Interesting response!! I was told by a dealer the glass was made smaller because the frame struts and cross bow was made to support a bigger glass in the framework of the top in 02s and my cars framework was not made to do so.. So after market companies went with a smaller window to avoid problems later. Are you certain the compartments are different sizes? Can I ask how you know this please? Thanks again!

POST 19Original post

I asked the top company. For whatever that's worth. The answer worked for me! Made sense at the time.

Thanks for the direction . Never took the possibility of the compartment being different into account. I am looking into it will update when I know more in fact. Cheers!!

POST 21Original post

No experience with them, but do a search on Gaah as I believe others have used them. They make a MK1 top with a glass window (at least from what I remember). http://www.gahh.com/ BTW, nice color combo

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11250426

My thanks for the liking. Backatcha! Guards and Savannah are a total eye candy combination!! My complements! Gaah does make a glass top, been there. I know where to get a new aftermarket top if I decide to go that route. Trying to exhaust this avenue first. Thanks for your input! Be Easy!!

(to close this loop) New Image Interior in Scarborough, see post #4 of this thread https://rennlist.com/forums/rennlist...l#post12396031 I will likely go to New Images Interior vs. Enco Auto Trim & Glass in North York strictly from logistics perspective since both shops would require the car for two days, New Image Interior is easier for me. I had been told Downtown Porsche sends this type of work to Enco, although I don't have confirmation of this info.

POST 26Original post

I say again: I replaced my rear window in our 1999 Cab with a glass version. Worked fine. Opened and closed fine. I think I gave a link to the fellow from whom I bought the top and rear glass insert.

POST 27Original post

I'm having a GAHH glass model installed next week on my 2001, and the guy says two days. I never thought of trying a full retrofit of the whole mechanism from a post 2002, sounds interesting, but the cost may make trading for a newer model look reasonable.

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here is the final word. 2002 and up the compartment has 3" more for the glass to fold. I liked the zip in bigger glass and the support bar Idea, but can't install the newer top on my car. Its that simple! The reason the glass is smaller on the aftermarket tops is because if they made it to the size of 2002 and up it would not collapse in the clamshell. I Bought an aftermarket top and it looks and works great! Thanks all for the opinions advice comments and instruction. ALL THE BEST!
