I also think they circumvented the OEM amp when they installed the head unit as the audio quality is rather poor.

Installed stereos and alarms on all kinds of cars through college.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Long time Porsche enthusiast as my dad had multiple Porsches back in Switzerland when I was a kid. He bought his first 911 back in the late 60s and traded up every few years. Having been born in 1981 I just remember his 930 Convertible and his 964 Convertible. He couldn't afford the 993s and beyond and stopped driving Porsches all together once we moved to the US (for his job) in the early 90s.
I went to the Porsche museum in Stuttgart multiple times and always told myself that I will own a 911 at some point and I will daily it until the wheels fall off. Life happened of course which resulted in buying a house, having kids, buying a bigger house, saving for college, saving for retirement, etc. Well, today I finally bought a 996 911. It's a 2001 and it's a (don't hate me) Tiptronic so I paid about what most people pay for a new Nissan Versa. I will post pictures and will post a ton of DIY related posts once the car is in my possession as it's out of state.
My Golf R will be turned into a fun track monster while the 996 will be my new DD until the wheels fall off as mentioned earlier.
Congrats, great story. Welcome to the best forum and group of owners on Rennlist. We don't judge, any 996 owner is a good 996 owner. That was a long wait, you are a patient man. I will say this. You will be tempted by other 911 models and they are all great, but the 996 just hits differently. Enjoy.
Congratulations and welcome to the group. If you were not previously on a slippery slope with the R, you are now absolutely on a slippery slope with the 996. Many smiles to come!
Welcome . This forum is very helpful with a lot of knowledge . The 996 is a great platform . Post pics when you can , that officially starts the journey 😋 .
Awesome. My story is pretty much the same. Installed stereos and alarms on all kinds of cars through college. Never enjoyed driving anything more than a 911 and said Id get one someday. Kids, house, college, and finally got there. Totally worth the wait. Who knew that our lust would end with a 911 that actually has heat and ac that works. Welcome aboard!
Just like a fish story, everyone has a car story and that what makes the Porsche community so fun. They're not just machines, but memories... sometimes bad ones, but hopefully mostly good ones. Enjoy that car!
Merci, ich freue mich da sii.
You are not kidding. I don't even have the car in my possession yet and already looking at wheels for it as the car currently sits on Carrera IV wheels. I'm also shopping for a more modern radio that still looks Porsche OEM from the early 00's era. On top of that I've also picked up a kit to hardwire the radar detector. All in all, the mods are already starting.
Flew to Florida on Sunday and drove the car back to San Antonio. Left Florida yesterday morning (9am) and made it back to San Antonio earlier today at 4am. Car drove well, only had one warning light come on which was for low washer fluid.
There are few items I will have to take care of:
- Tiptronic shifter button is worn. I'll probably just remove it, sand it, and paint it silver again.
- Alcantara liner on sunroof is a bit loose. I'll have to tackle that.
- The driver seat has a small split on one of the seams on the seat bottom. I'll see if I can have a local upholstery shop handle that. Might just see if I can source new seat covers altogether.
- There is a ground loop hum that is RPM dependent, I suspect it's the aftermarket head unit which looks to be some cheap Blaupunkt. I also think they circumvented the OEM amp when they installed the head unit as the audio quality is rather poor. I'll be installing the Continental unit in due time.
I'm sure this is due to the age of the car and a brand new 996 probably would have felt different but a 22 year old 996 feels raw. It's very mechanical feeling even with the Tiptronic. You can feel and hear absolutely everything. I love it but I can imagine it could turn off someone that wants peace, quiet, and all the latest gadgets.
Sounds familiar, i live in Louisiana, formerly from the UK, I bought my 996 in Fort Lauderdale and drove it back in one day 850 miles, that Mobile AL tunnel and Bridge had me watching the temp gauge for 45 minutes... mine is a 2000 model year, and has had a lot of the heavy maintenance done, so i was somewhat confident , lets just say i was relieved the closer i got to my destination.... Well done Sir..
Congrats on the car. Alignment and a good set of tires will help. Then it comes down to what you want for a suspension and exhaust to smooth out the drive and sounds. But yeah, it's much more analog and raw than the cushy new ones. Part of its charm.
Agree, it has the incorrect sizes on it currently. The sidewalls are way too thin, which the prior owner did intentionally as he liked the handling better.
Fixed the failing Alcantara roof lining on the sunroof cover this weekend. Taking the cover off and regluing the fabric was easy, putting the cover back on was a pain in the a$$.I did find a little booklet along with the owner's manual with maintenance listed from 2013 through 2022 so now I know what maintenance I need to do and not do coming up.
I have only one picture so far that I took once I arrived home from my 19 hour drive. I'll be taking a ton of pictures going forward of all the work.
