only other things about the car that are triggering my spider-sense are BOSE branded speakers in doors (will check for sub behind rear seats) but this not on the factory build specs and it has a "GT3 style" rear spoiler and side skirts which again is not factory / OEM...

Years ago, I used Ziebart which was simply some sort of black bitumen material that was coated on my old 356's inner fenders and pan to slow down the Burmese gas and tin worms that turned my 57 Cabriolet into a Flinstone vehicle.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all - first time poster so be gentle with me... :-) I am looking at a 2002 996 at the moment but the one thing that is putting me off is the fact the underside has been undersealed - i am told it is Ziebart and that there was rust treatment before the underseal was applied. Should i run a mile or is this something i should not be worried about? My experience with 1970s UK cars with factory / dealer underseal is really putting me off!

POST 2Original post

Well, i would want to know the rest of the story, whats the provenance of the car, is it for sale at a dealer who specializes in Porsches? what kind of service history? gotta look at the whole picture to see if what you are being told is likely true or covering up some horror, i would say in my opinion don't buy a cheap Porsche it will end up costing you more, pay up front for a good one from an enthusiast or a reputable dealer...

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Gary - I have a bit more info (I am seeing the car on Thursday so just doing due diligence in advance at the moment). Basically the underside of the car was steam cleaned with all the liners and undertrays removed. Any areas of corrosion around fasteners etc were taken back to bare metal, rust converted and then epoxy primered. Then they used rubberised stonechip on the underside before putting it all back together. The car is from as private seller and there is a think file of history that comes with it, I get to see the car on a ramp when i view which will help. Hartek rebuilt the engine 5k miles ago which for me seems to be a positive selling point...

POST 4Original post

Years ago, I used Ziebart which was simply some sort of black bitumen material that was coated on my old 356's inner fenders and pan to slow down the Burmese gas and tin worms that turned my 57 Cabriolet into a Flinstone vehicle. In the late seventies, there weren't many people making repair panels, nor were there many paint or coating choices aside from enamel, lacquer, Centari, and Imron....while two-stage paint was in its infancy ..... so it was hand hammering out the patch panels, prime, and coat. I am unsure about current Ziebart products or practices. Still, I have used Wurth's stone chip material to repair a few areas on my 2000 Cabriolet where the factory material was worn down. Too bad that they did not take pictures of the repair to document. Nonetheless, I wonder why the owner is selling after getting a Hartek rebuild and all the work involved.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The current owner has had the car for past 5 years and put only a few thousand miles on the car... the engine rebuild was the previous owner... seems pretty genuine - basically said he had wanted a 911 his whole life and he has scratched the itch now... the underbody work was fully documented with photos so will be looking at that when i view the car... only other things about the car that are triggering my spider-sense are BOSE branded speakers in doors (will check for sub behind rear seats) but this not on the factory build specs and it has a "GT3 style" rear spoiler and side skirts which again is not factory / OEM... relatively simple to reinstate the original spoiler though (hoping actuators are still there).

You will want to take a hard look at the deck lid and look for the factory molded stampings. It was not uncommon for the Aerokit 2 kit to be installed by the dealers and it was $7-8k before paint and install. The factory Aerokit deck lid and wing r worth $3-4k in the states so sell it off and u will have to buy the entire stock lid assembly. I would suggest getting a used take off and paint it. U wiil make good money on all if its a factory part. Also look to make sure the intake on the lid is on the left side, if its in the right it may be a factory gt3 wing/lid and the value may double.

Sounds like an interesting car and a Hartech rebuild is a huge bonus...
