Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I've checked all fuses, as well as the one on the immobilizer itself, everything seems fine.
Leading evidence: 'Check fuses, as well as the one' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check each one' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

However when I use a cheapo scan tool that doesn't read the vin, it works.

I'm prepared to test all the OBD2 circuits, but that will be very time consuming to check each one.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys, I need some help. Hopefully someone has experienced this before, but i haven't found anything during my research.
When I bought my 99' 996 cabrio 2 years ago, it came with only one key, and it only worked with the ignition but not the alarm. I had been enjoying the car this way while sorting out other more important issues, but I finally bought a new key head, and took it to my local Porsche specialist (very reputable) for programming. Unfortunately, the PIWIS would not connect, showing error "VIN not recognized". He even tried another scanner, not sure which, and same thing. He assured me that it has no problem connecting to even 993's with the same scanner. However when I use a cheapo scan tool that doesn't read the vin, it works.
I'm assuming the PIWIS reads the vin from the immobilizer...or is it actually the DME? I know the immobilizer can cause issues when it gets wet, but the car runs fine, and there is no evidence of moisture in the cabin. I've checked all fuses, as well as the one on the immobilizer itself, everything seems fine. I'm prepared to test all the OBD2 circuits, but that will be very time consuming to check each one. I'm hoping someone can guide me in the right direction, or maybe has experienced this before.
Thanks in advance.
So just a quick update. First dealer claimed it was impossible to program a key that wasn't pre-programmed in Germany first. (Typical arrogant female service advisor who thinks they're more knowledgeable than they actually are). Second dealer programmed it without issue, I was also offered a coffee and a car wash. Oh and they only charged me 1/2hr.
So you were both right. My indy probably has a knockoff PIWIS, and customer service differs vastly from one dealer to the next. But we all knew that already.
Thanks guys.
