I was going to suggest checking for a blocked pedal, carpet or some other object, but now you've done that.

Would go into gear with engine off then would start but with some clutch "creep" and I could get the car moving but again wouldn't let me change gear with engine running.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

99 996 C2 w/ 58k miles. New clutch and IMS about 6k miles ago. Did a long highway drive (150 miles) then parked overnight. Started car in morning with clutch depressed and attempted to put in gear but gear lever wouldn't engage the gear in any gear while car was running. Would go into gear with engine off then would start but with some clutch "creep" and I could get the car moving but again wouldn't let me change gear with engine running. I left the car for several hours and came back to it expecting the same problem but it started, went into gear fine and let me drive it 150 miles back home. Everything seemed fine.
I put in a couple of drives including a big 100 mile canyon run with everything seeming fine (although in the back of my mind I was kind of expecting trouble again) then parked it for a few days. Went to pull the car out and experienced exactly the same problem again.
Any thoughts on diagnosis/fix. Seems like it could be as simple as needing a bleed, slave cylinder, master cylinder or even throwout bearing. Appreciate your help. Thank you!
UPDATE: Just got under the dash and was taking a look to trouble shoot. Was able to pull the clutch pedal back towards the wheel about 1-2 inches. Started car, depressed the clutch which now felt like it had full travel and was able to get it into gear.
Obviously there's an issue that needs to get addressed but at least I can drive it for now. Again anyone have any thoughts on this. I appreciate the input.
I was going to suggest checking for a blocked pedal, carpet or some other object, but now you've done that. I'd flow a bottle of brake fluid through it and bleed the system. You've probably changed out your brake fluid (same reservoir as clutch) a few times but it you kept your slave attached when you did your clutch the fluid may have gelled from age. When you bleed your slave be sure to have your front end higher than the rear so the last bubble of air can travel to the bleed nipple. Many here have had trouble getting a full bleed with the car level or rear raised.
Your clutch master cylinder is on the way out. Per other suggestions I would also bleed it once replaced. Also check your assist spring to see if it is broken also. - scrh1
