Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

There has been many engines Rebuilt due to this noise that the noise was still there after the Rebuild ( and had to replace the Cat)..

I have no codes and just passed the California smog test earlier this week and running fine, just have that frigging noise at Idle to contend with.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A couple of weeks ago a guy on a Facebook page shows a video of a 2000 Carrera with a loud ticking/knocking sound at idle on bank 2..
Of course everyone jumps the gun with about a 100 "Guru's " saying borescoring and another 10% saying lifters....
I told the OP to get a Mechanics Stethoscope ($20) and to listen to the Catalytic Converters , he came back to me and told me found the Core of the Catalytic Converter was loose and falling apart and gave me a picture of a piece of the Converter ...( Below)
I have seen this before especially on the "early 3.4's " with the IRon Ferrostan Piston plating just hardly ever scores.....

A piece of Catalytic Converter
You had told me to look/listen there many years ago, even bought a mechanics stethoscope, but failed to get the results I was looking for. I have 1/98 C2 with 60K. Today was the day to give it the old (second) college try. After a forty minute ride, I came back and gave it a go, sure enough, bank 2, passenger side cat sounded like marbles, bank 1, nothing. Removed it today, hoping for a eureka moment and see a similar chunk fall out like the one pictured, but I got nothing! Shaking it was whispered quite as well. Could it still be failed, I did not remove the O2 sensor yet, thought I'd pause and do a little forum scouring, before anymore removal. I have no codes and just passed the California smog test earlier this week and running fine, just have that frigging noise at Idle to contend with.
I suppose you are talking about this Thread/Video...
Yes it can still be the CAT ...when they cool off the shell can squeeze down tight on the CAT and stop the noise....When hot the shell will grow and get loose and make the tapping noise...

I'll take plausible, so the next move would be to find a salvaged bank 2 cat? or is there another way of testing,.... anybody out there with a cat that's been sitting on a shelf and you want to get rid of, please PM me, I hate to throw big money at it on a maybe, I have Fisters muffler set-up now, so not looking to change the whole exhaust
If you have a distinct difference in Noise from one Cat to the other. then it is not a "maybe".....
If you are unsure then take to a PRO to have a listen...slinging a few $$ to a Pro will cost less than buying unneeded parts...
Much appreciate your help Skip. Its a no doubter, no noise on bank 1 at all, followed both pipes before and after cat, noise only followed bank 2, I already have it removed, so if I can source a replacement for that side, I think that is the best path forward, mix-matching with an aftermarket cat for one side, like magna-flow cut and weld in, if that's even possible, seems like a recipe for disaster.
