I did call a Porsche dealer and checked using the VIN that at least the oil's been changed a few times, but nothing else on record unfortunately.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking to buy a 996 and found a 1999 that has all the options I've been looking for. Only 16k miles, and cosmetically pristine. The only 2 things holding me back are: complete lack of any service history on the CARFAX report (except for a battery replacement in 2000) and a previous accident report (police report: moderate damage to right rear, without claim). The seller is 100% okay with getting a PPI done. Is the lack of any service history (even on a low mileage) a big enough reason to walk (or run?) away, or would a thorough PPI from a trusted Porsche mechanic likely suffice? I'm okay with spending an extra 5k or so just to bring all the maintenance up to date after a purchase, but wanted to hear the group's opinion on whether or not it's just a terrible idea. Thanks in advance for any voice of reason.

POST 2Original post

No reason to run away. Get a good PPI and I'd budget more than $5k. How many miles has it been driven by the current owner?

POST 3Original post

Run away from a possible GEM? Hell no, get that PPI done. What's the build month / year? If it's an early build buy buy buy!

POST 5Original post

Hell, even Porsche originally set an oil change interval of 15K miles. Now we know that is not a good idea. Get a good PPI, check everything over, buy it. Schedule to have an oil change and brake fluid change, then enjoy.

POST 7Original post

Where did the current owner service the car?, likely a dealer, with his help they will give you the service records... shouldn't be much anyway... sad it sat so much.. I would splurge at a good indy for a real deep PPI and pay for the oil change.. (They will have the oil out anyway... ) If they cant find anything.. sounds like. solid choice, but remember that car is still about 30 years old,, so all the rubber will likely be tired, so plan on maybe bushings, mounts and some mis trim rubber replacement..

POST 8Original post

If the odometer is right, there haven't been enough miles to worry about the lack of service record in CarFax. I would want to know why it wasn't used. Did the owner die and the kids didn't care about the care? If the oil has been in the car for years, I would want that replaced before I fired it up and drove it any distance. You are going to want to drain and replace every fluid in that car. If this is your first, you will want a technician you trust to guide you to what needs to be done. I thank the Lord my tech knew more about it than me and I had a fat wallet to handle it. If this is your first, let your tech set up a Needs List and then do your best to check it all off. Check the date on the tires. They may be old. Let us know how it works out and send pictures. Does the price start with a 2 or a 3?

POST 9Original post

Try to find out what the previous owners did for maintenance. CarFax and/or dealer reports may not show all that was done.

POST 10Original post

definitely not worth it! you dont know whats lurking underneath! so whats the link, you know - for educational purposes of course

Thanks for the helpful replies everyone. Made an appointment for a PPI and a borescope from the sump. Was debating whether or not the scope would be necessary (or if it'd even show much given the low mileage) but figured it was worth it for my peace of mind. If everything checks out, hopefully have it in my garage within the next 2 weeks Only about 300 miles by the previous owner over a year and a half. He was pretty upfront about having bought it just to flip and make some money, and I appreciated the honesty. Not sure exactly, but don't think it's one of the very early ones given that it doesn't have the amber front headlights. I'll be happy to share if I decide to let this one go Thanks for the tip! Not sure about the previous history/why it sat for so long. I did call a Porsche dealer and checked using the VIN that at least the oil's been changed a few times, but nothing else on record unfortunately. Will definitely plan to drain and replace everything, and take it in for a major service before putting any miles on it. The price starts with a 3. Seen lots of 2s with some higher mileage in my area, but none that checked the boxes like this one, in pristine condition. I guess that's the price to pay for my impatience

POST 12Original post

MSYKR- No reason to run, simply start with the basic's. sounds like it could be a very nice car. Definately get a PPI and see what it turns up. But expect to start with the fluids first, oil, trans, brake and coolant. Then tire dates, and nuber of owners. It it is a true early 99 it will have a dual row IMS so no problem there and way too early for a clutch. Get the build date on the VIN sticker to ensure it is an early car, and if a Cab is may come with a hard top that you may not fell like you need but it makes a huge difference in the driving during certain times of the year. I have a 99 Cab with 51K and love it, such a sweet analog car and the early ones are different, as in amber lights. Definately the way to go. Expect so spend some money on it, probably plugs and coild packs to start with and you will have a call that is a pleasure to drive and enjoy. There are no short cuts but quality always prevails......

POST 13Original post

Not every dealer or repair shop reports to CarFax. They have to sign up for the service for the records to appear on the report. A blank CarFax DOES NOT mean the car was not well maintained.

POST 14Original post

Price beginning with a 3 for a pristine 996 and a clean motor seems more than fair, but I appreciate your comments on finding the right vehicle. I did a national search for two years and in that time found only two. It's totally worth it to set up high hurdles. We are all enjoying the hunt here.

POST 16Original post

Hey OP, I looked around for almost 2 years after selling my 996.2 for an early build with the options I wanted. Finally found one around 100 miles from me this march. That one had an asking of 34k , not what I paid, but it still had a 3 as the first number!😎 my point being, if it checks the boxes and won’t kill the budget getting it right for the road, go ahead and get it. There was one on bat aero kit, went for a lot more than I expected. They are out there in limited quantity and it’s worth the $ in my opinion. Good luck!

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just a quick update - purchase was pending a PPI and borescope scheduled for tomorrow, but seller apparently found a buyer willing to purchase the car as-is off the lot without any condition. The same deal was offered to me, I wasn't willing to take that risk so decided to walk away. Whether the seller really had a buyer or they discovered something that they didn't want being revealed during inspection, I guess I'll never know. Really bummed out, but hopefully it was the right thing to do!

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 18882662

Don't be bummed out, you did the right thing. While low mileage cars go for more at auction because of the mindset of the average bidder (thinks he getting a like-new car), low mileage Porsches, especially the M9X based are more prone to problems. These cars must be exercised. A garage queen Porsche is a red flag in my book. To avoid a money pit, I would recommend always get these cars inspected. Production stalls of parts have impacted the repairs and maintenance of these cars. You add hyperinflation and it gets ugly. Word to the wise!

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 18882662

Was there a link? still be curious to see the car (no not going to buy it ) Yeh don't sweat it. My first attempt to buy fell through, and I inadvertently found out the prior-prior owner had the top end of the engine rebuilt, which was missing in the sellers service records. It was a 99 with 40k miles. But a top end rebuild major red flag. I ended up buying a 99' early build (after the failed first buy I learned about the early builds, and sought only those out.) I bought on auction from a smaller dealer flip, and rolled the dice, but the post buy inspection found everything in top shape (minor wear items only). Mechanic said the cars that are used regularly and driven like their intended always turn out better. Granted you'll see threads on here of engine failures at all miles, it really does tend to be safer in a higher mile car, where most of what would have gone wrong already has. Anyway, not 100a% reliable advice, but don't lose hope, the 996 market is still so low for what you get. I love mine, and at mid $20k it left me with a lot of extra cash to update things

POST 20Original post

100% right thing to do. Someone had a chat with the seller letting him/her know that if you do a PPI and find something wrong and don't go ahead with the sale, it means they would, in all honesty, have to disclose that to the next buyer and see a real drop in price. Or they already know something. In either case you are likely better off. Google the VIN in a couple weeks and see where it landed. Also, if you aren't a member of the PCA, you should join and patrol the cars for sale. There are a lot of very well cared for 996s there for sale by people who know all about this generation 911.

POST 21Original post

The seller just followed a simple rule of choosing the easier path with less risk to them. A lot of sellers (dealers especially) dont want to know anything about the history of the car. If you know nothing, theres little downside. If you know something good about the car, thats a small upside and will never pay for any potential downside of something learned. The downsides of these cars are 10X any upside.

POST 24Original post

If you make the engine out of aluminum, you save weight and increase gas mileage, but you can't have pistons sliding up and down inside an aluminum cylinder. One of the options is to coat the cylinder with a harder material. 996 isn't the only vehicle with an aluminum engine and plated cylinders. It's a tradeoff.

POST 25Original post

I've seen for scoring in iron engines,, same causes just a bit less common..

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
