Completely agree with diagnostic tests recommended by Porschetec3.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My son had back fusion and it worked out fine, but the recovery was about 6 months, and the docs didn't tell us about that part!
I'm trying to find what the value of my 996 with a blown engine is?
125,000 miles
Tiptronic
Convertible
Black Exterior
Grey Leather Interior
After market CD/DVD and HD TV (Free Network Channels) and also the original radio.
No damage to body
Everything is good except engine seems to be locked up
Any help would be appreciated!

If I were to be in the market for a car with busted engine to fix up, I would pay up tp $10K for a Coupe, with 6 speed, in good cosmetic condition. This car has two strikes (for me) being a convertible and tipt, so I would probably think it is worth $7K to me. Parting it out is a lot more money, but also a lot more work.
Where are you located? Tippy cabs might be more in demand if the location is right. In Chicago, not so much. Delray Beach, more so.
post up some pics and see what kind of response you get. Have you had a qualified person inspect it?
Well, a lot depends on exactly what happened to lock up motor. To get more $$$ from the right guy, it depends what engine parts are salvageable/saleable. Or if the engine is a good core for a rebuild.
With no engine in it at all, just a empty roller, with automatic tranny, above estimates seem likely to reflect its worth, and might be hard to get that much...
Problem is, with the tip tranny, engine swaps are limited. JFYI, the tip is the least desirable 996, reflected in its selling prices...
Thanks for the fast replies! I will take some pics later today and post them. I have to scavenge a battery so I can display the instrument cluster showing mileage, etc.
I was wrong about the mileage, its 147,707. It has been sitting in my garage for a while.
I did have a shop check it out a while back but wasn't confident in their assessment of the problem. talking with a Porsche motor rebuilder in San Diego, CA and explaining how the car stopped, he said it may be the intermediate bearing.
I was sitting at a left turn light when I noticed a lot of smoke bellowing out in my rear view mirror. I pulled to the side of the street and the car cut off, no noises like something broke. When I tried to restart it, it turned over very slowly. I towed it home at that point.
I was offered $5,325.00 from Mills Motors in Pompano Beach, FL. Do you think this is reasonable or should I wait for other offers? I am located in Southern California (Temecula, CA)

An AOS failure is my hypothesis also...
I don't know what your original tech's assessment was or why you were not confident in it, or how confident I am in your symptoms description since this is your first post and it is to get rid of the car..
BUT, If i were you, I would have the car towed to a local Indy and have him pull the spark plugs and turn the engine by hand to pump out the oil. Then disconnect the AOS pipe and temporarily plug it off and crank the engine..See if the engine runs with no unusual noise and the smoking eventually goes away...
If all goes well and no noise and smoking clears, I would install my Patented UAOS system and sell the car for $22K ...( unless you are OK with leaving $15k on the drivers seat when you sell)
When an AOS fails like that, ~85% of the time it does no engine damage, but ~15% of the time it can bend rods or crack cylinders,,, so the odds are greatly in your favor ...
Completely agree with diagnostic tests recommended by Porschetec3. You are looking at maybe $1k? to diagnose the real issue and if he is right, another $1-$2K to fix it, so you will come out way ahead if he is correct. But is there something wrong with the top? Why is the mirror on the dash and wires hanging down from where top mates to windshield? I would also get a tender on the battery. It shouldn't read 11 volts. Maybe not recoverable at this point, but you can try.
My son had back fusion and it worked out fine, but the recovery was about 6 months, and the docs didn't tell us about that part!
I was going to change out the rear view mirror but I re-installed the factory mirror yesterday. The wires hanging are for the Radar detector I had but someone stole out of my car and the additional wire is for connecting my cell phone to charge when I have it mounted under the mirror.
Thanks for perspective. I used to have an account here several years ago but forgot my login credentials and this is my 3rd Porsche, 911 SC, 911 Carrera Targa and this 996.
I will consider your suggestion however, my back issues really cause me problems getting in and out of the car. Maybe after surgery, it will be better.
Thats a good amount of 911s under your belt.
Ive had 3 Porsches, but only 2 911s. The first was an 88 Carrera Targa. That car was fun when I had only 1 out of the 21.1 gallons of gas left in the tank (120 lbs lighter in the front end!).
I completely agree with 996-CAB and Skip.
I would take it to a reputable shop and get an assessment. For every horror story of a blown engine, there are also engines that are just fine, and many of those dont make it on these threads!
Just based on the description of the fail,,, You also may have had a small perfect storm, slow cranking can also be a
burnt engine Y cable to the starter, You may have lost charging and literally just ran the battery too low to fire it up..
It wont always turn on the dash lights..
