Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Today I filled my 2003 996 with fuel as it was at 1/4 tank.
Leading evidence: 'Fill 2003 996' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Last week I ran a track day, after 3 sessions the fuel was below 1/2 on the gauge.

When I got home I used the fuel pump to empty the tank and pumped out 15+ gallons.

The gauge continued to show less than 1/2 so I thought I used more fuel than expected.

Suggestion
Give the car a hard reset by disconnecting the negative lead on the battery.

Suggestion
In the owner's guide there's a statement to the effect of running the fuel below 1/2 and then adding only a small amount of fuel, the added fuel won't be shown on the gauge - it must be filled to at least 1/2 before the gauge will show the correct level.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Quick update car sat for 2 hours and once started guage read full all back to normal.
Today I filled my 2003 996 with fuel as it was at 1/4 tank. After filling it the fuel guage still showed 1/4 tank and the computer showed 80Km to empty
I dove a few kilometers and the guage registered lower and the low fuel light came on and the computer said fuel low .
Went to the gas station to add more fuel but it was full. After a restart same thing low fuel and less than 1/4 tank and 60km to empty. So still counting down as if I never added any fuel.
Turned off the car armed alarm waited disarmed and restarted still says low fuel.
I am confused .
Could be the float in the fuel tank is stuck. C2 or C4S? Different tanks. I would try a couple of things. Pull the fuse for the fuel pump. Give the car a hard reset by disconnecting the negative lead on the battery. Wait an hour and reconnect.
Well, thats not a venting problem.
Well, the gauge and the computer both find the fuel level low, so thats probably not a bad gauge. Very possibly the fuel gauge sender is stuck or damaged. Pull the tank hat off and pull out the sender. Leave the electrical connector plugged for the sender and move the arm up and down, see if fuel level moves with it...
I just fixed this exact problem with my 6TT. The problem I found is applicable to any AWD 996/997:
I'm sure everyone knows that the fuel gauge sender only works between full and 1/2. Below 1/2 the cluster estimates (guesses) remaining fuel based on consumption. In the owner's guide there's a statement to the effect of running the fuel below 1/2 and then adding only a small amount of fuel, the added fuel won't be shown on the gauge - it must be filled to at least 1/2 before the gauge will show the correct level.
Last week I ran a track day, after 3 sessions the fuel was below 1/2 on the gauge. When it gets that low I add more fuel as I don't completely trust the jet pumps. So I put in 5 gallons from a jug. The gauge continued to show less than 1/2 so I thought I used more fuel than expected. After another session the gauge was showing empty with remaining range as "---" so I put 5 more gallons in. Ran the last session wondering if I was going to run out of gas... didn't happen. Driving home I decided to fill it up to reset the gas gauge but it only took 3 gallons. So I thought I had the fuel tank vent valve problem where it won't take fuel even though I could hear the click.
When I got home I used the fuel pump to empty the tank and pumped out 15+ gallons. So the problem isn't that it won't take fuel, the "problem" was that it's full and the gauge is kaput. Lets take it apart and see..
Hmm, that doesn't look right. The float's got to be in the tank somewhere. Finally I retrieved it from the bottom of the left side basin, had my whole arm in the tank trying to reach it. I cannot imagine how it came off the sensor as it clicks into place quite securely. Let's add something to safety it, shall we?
That should do the trick. Put it back together and added 10 gallons of fuel - hey presto, the gauge is working again!
