Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Had a mid-level rebuild four years ago at 76k (split the case to replace the IMS bearing and shaft with a new Porsche part, had both cylinder heads ultrasonically cleaned due to bad WP failure, did all maintenance items such as chains, tensioners, bearings, with updates where appropriate, etc.)

All of the spark plugs are clean (the electrodes, but the upper porcelain has oil on #'s 1 and 2).

This was just scheduled maintenance due to the age/mileage on the coils, I wasn't getting any misfires yet (although I previously had to replace the #2 coil that failed prematurely).

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1999 996 cab. Around 107k.
Just finished replacing plugs and coils this past weekend. This was just scheduled maintenance due to the age/mileage on the coils, I wasn't getting any misfires yet (although I previously had to replace the #2 coil that failed prematurely). Cylinders #1 and #2 have oil in the spark plug tubes. It appears that oil has been 'weeping' out of #1's spark plug tube as well, but never enough to see any on the ground. All the rest were clean. All of the spark plugs are clean (the electrodes, but the upper porcelain has oil on #'s 1 and 2). No intermix or any other such problems, but uses about 1/2 quart between oil changes. Is the presence of oil in these tubes an indicator of any potentially big problems? Is there something I should do proactively, such as replace the tubes and o-rings to stop the oil from leaking into them?
Sorry about the picture quality. It's tough to get a pic down those tubes with mufflers mounted.
To the first part. Its a common issue and just a quirk of our motors if u have already done the plugs the tubes and rings r just one step further. Simple and cheap repair, fcpeuro has a 6 pack kit or u can get them individually.
oil in the tubes is not an indication that anything else is wrong but the o-rings on the tubes
Great, that's good to hear. I was a little concerned that since this problem only appeared on cylinders 1 & 2 (known to be a problem area), that it could possibly be something more.
@De Jeeper
I actually bought the FCP Euro kit for this job. It's a shame they don't include the spark plug tubes and seals, at least as an option. Now that I've been researching this, I see that there are other kits out there that do. I'll suggest this to FCP Euro.
Sorry, I was trying to type as few words as possible while laying on the couch resting, holding my lap top with one hand and typing with the other. An old *** dog trying a new trick.lol
If there were a bigger issue I would have "tried" to say so, it just needs tubes and o-rings.
My understanding is there are metal tubes w/O-rings that are an upgrade over the plastic tubes. I guess Porsche initially figured our engines would never last 100K miles, so lets stick a cheapo plastic tube so it can deteriorate with age, heat and oil. I don't know where to get the metal tubes, but I think Jake at FSI knows. Someone else might chime in as well.
Haha, thanks. I have a vested interest in this topic, as my car is doing the same, lol. I ordered a 6 pack of tubes with rings for like $35 from DP. Also got an 8pk of plugs from a different seller, for about the same money. Oddly the 8pk was cheaper then the 6pk of plugs 🤔🤷♂️
