Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Clean solid ground' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean solid ground' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

We have a 996TT in the museum right now that the owner closed the frunk on right after disconnecting the battery.

and you can use the U-shape door latch on the door jam as the solid ground...as described in the owner's manual.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

We had a plug in trickle charger for the cigarette lighter but it didn't work to pop the frunk.
Has anyone ever tried using something like this:

to open the hood when the battery is completely dead? Seems like it could be a handy thing to keep around (not in the frunk!) to avoid needing a set of jumper cables just to open the hood.
***Just to be clear, since some people on this board seem to write first, read later (if ever?), I'm NOT suggesting trying to start the car with a 9V battery***
I would be surprised if it has enough juice to power the latch. I think these will work much better

Isn't the battery needed to complete the circuit?
If so, no electrical boost system would work to pop the hood or power anything at all without a battery in the system to complete the circuit.
Well, that's what I was afraid of, but several people have told the owner that a battery hooked up to the fuse box will do the trick. He hasn't been back to try it yet, and I'm not going to mess with it myself. I'll post what happens when the Porsche Month display wraps up on February 28th.
Correct. The opener has a separate circuit accessible in the foot well fuse box. It requires a connection to a 12v battery. A small charger isn't sufficient. Also requires a clean solid ground.
It definitely works, but is a little tricky. When I tried it, I had a hard time getting a good positive connection. I had to simultaneously jiggle the positive lead, and repeatedly pull the hood release button. I never had a good connection long enough to even see the odometer light up.
Update - I tired the settings keeper, it did not work. I plugged it in after disconnecting the negative battery terminal, and the red light in the middle top of the radio started to flash, and I could hear something turn on (not sure what) but neither latch worked. I think you have to use the fusebox method. The jump starters that Ahsai posted would probably work, but it looks like the cables are not long enough to reach from the box to the door latch where you are supposed to ground.
You do know that there is a wire cable manual release in front of the right front wheel? Sometimes you can see it if you get under the front of the car. Or if you pull the side marker light you might be able to see it and fish it out.
Worst case jack it up pull the wheel and front inner fender to get access.
Right, but I was hoping for a very easy solution that didn't need tools, and I could keep in my glove box. If I'm at home I have a few options, if I'm parallel parked on a busy street I definitely want the simplest solution.
