Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion · Original poster

The Torque + Angle method of tightening is just a more accurate way of tightening a fastener..

Caution ::: Be careful on "standard Torque Specs" ( not Torque + Angle * Method ) using any low friction products on the threads or under the bolt heads.....If the Standard Torque Specs are not designed for this, you will over-twist the bolt and snap the head off before even reaching the Torque Specs...

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 1 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Do with this info as you wish ... 95% of all m96/7 head bolts are not TTY ( Torque - to -Yield ) and can be re-used.... The way to tell ::: The early m96 head bolts 97-98-99 that used a T50 Torx bit and were M10 x 234mm long were TTY and were not to be re-used These were replaced in 1999 with T55 Torx head that were M10 x 230mm long and could be re-used I have posted this before but it has been years and is lost deep a Thread Rabbit hole, but with so many new owners of M96 powered cars I thought it may be usefull to a few and save someone $500 I know of one guy who went back into the engine for some reason to correct a small mistake and bought another set of bolts because he had allready torqued them down...They used to be $4 a bolt but now they are over $20 a bolt ....so two sets over $1000 bucks Just because a torque spec calls for a Torque + Angle does not mean for sure it is a TTY fastener..... The Torque + Angle method of tightening is just a more accurate way of tightening a fastener.. Torquing alone is not that accurate because 80% of the torque is used to overcome the friction of the threads and not to stretch/load the bolt...Only 20% of the Torque is used to actually stretch/load the fastener. Example...An m10 x 1.0 thread after seating and gasket crush , a 180* Angle will stretch the bolt exactly 0.5mm irregardless of the torque it takes to turn the bolt against the friction of the threads/bolt head...... I have seen this a bunch on Chevy LS engines... All bolts go into an elastic/spring stage before going into a plastic deformation stage after yielding ...If a bolt is never stretched past the elastic/spring stage, then it hasn't yielded or lost any of its original strength.. A Pro Wrencher can "feel" when/if a bolt yields... Use this info as you wish ...

That's great info. It's a shame to replace things that don't need to be replaced.
