I just installed a PCCM+ in my 04 that has Bose and the sound quality to my untrained and probably damaged old ears is significantly better.

Delivery to the USA will be expensive I'm afraid, it will be between 10 and 14 UK depending on what items you need as this changes the size and weight of the package.

* The criteria for the dash speakers relates to the driver side as it has the instrument cluster with the associated cables running underneath the speaker, with a plastic cover to shield them.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I am about to install a PCCM Plus, have original CDR23 and stock speakers in the car now. [non-bose].
I've sifted through a lot of threads on speaker replacements, but many are dated and I am wondering if anyone knows of good choices for speaker replacements. [2002 996].
I am looking for ones that are as close to stock as possible, without requiring cutting or modification to the car.

I dealt directly with Rod, the owner, and was very satisfied. I bought the Hertz speakers pre-mounted in the custom adapter plates. Not your cheapest option, but I wasn't into doing any fabricating.
Last time I checked you can still order the factory HAES speakers for these cars. Of course, they're a lot more than aftermarket but less hassle installing.
If you go with aftermarket, I recommend contacting Crutchfield. The dash and rear speakers are pretty much just standard 4" speaker running at 4 ohm. But the door speakers are 5 1/4" and run at 2 ohm. Whatever you do, don't install 4 ohm speaker in the door if you're retaining the factory amplifier. You need 2 ohm speakers.
Harman that owns the Becker brand, also owns Infinity speaker brand. You can purchase them from Crutchfield. These 5.25" drivers run at 2.7 ohm which is suitable for the Porsche factory amp.

Last thought... you're going to find that you must modify the front dash and rear speakers if you go aftermarket. This is because Porsche made a proprietary non-standard design.
Thanks for the information!
It took me 3 nights to finish the install of the PCCM+ Overall I am really happy with it so far.
I decided to not to upgrade the speakers, I will see if I can live with them for a while. I've been listening to music in the car for an hour now and I think the doors sound fine, the front and rear seem like 7/10, but before the install they were probably 4/10 considering bluetooth or AUX cable.
Overall with the PCCM+ install into my 2002, everything sounds quite a bit better than the CDR220. I have the non-bose system with the frunk amplifier.
I just installed a PCCM+ in my 04 that has Bose and the sound quality to my untrained and probably damaged old ears is significantly better. I'd suggest you try it first
Just jumping in to add a little that I just found in case anyone is looking and does not want to cut anything: adapter plates for 4" speakers for dash and rear speakers that require no hacking! About $90 for front/back adapters including postage from England.
This guys is super cool to work with and responds on the spot and is willing to answer questions. He also turned me on to the speaker wire harness adapters that I cannot find searching under Porsche or they are all out and he gave me the generic part number that works:

* The criteria for the dash speakers relates to the driver side as it has the instrument cluster with the associated cables running underneath the speaker, with a plastic cover to shield them. If you don't want to trim away parts of that cover (which is pretty easy to be fair) then you are limited to a speaker that has a magnet a maximum of 70mm diameter, the speaker body cant be any taller in total than 43mm, and the mounting surface (with the 4 tabs for screws) can only be 1.5mm in thickness as these adapters are surface mounted rather than from the top, so the tab thickness adds to the total height which is critical here as the space is tiny in there. Or you can trim away that plastic to open it up a bit, but yeah that's work to do...
In the rear of the 996 any 4” speaker will fit so long as it is the coupe.
An example of a speaker that meets the dash criteria is the Kenwood kfc-s106.
