Suspected cause
Its probably the closest thing to an air cooled 911 but at 1/3 the price 🤣
Leading evidence: 'closest thing' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'closest thing' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check sticker' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Just as a year ago people were buying 996s because what else can you get for $20k that is as good as this, now just replace $20k with $30k and the comment is just as accurate.

There are "dead" buttons next to the climate control (depending on how minimally specd the car is) that I replaced with some "light" toggle switches that can be used to cycle through the other OBC functions...., well..., could be used if ever get around to wiring it.

If you’re running those original #408 BBS narrow fitment hollow spokes, then your 911 is the lightest early MY1999 911 made (under 2,900 LBS) 🤑

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

One thing that jumped out at me was 13 previous owners, not necessarily bad just thought mine was high at 5 or 6. I also think red and beige is such a classy combo on a Porsche.
That one should do well in Guards/Tan with ambers. Type 996 is metamorphosing into the priceless classic it always was.
Only took 25 years, or so.
Always does.
Optional TC almost always accompanies LSD on MY1999. The two arent mutually inclusive, but its actually rarer to find TC without LSD than to find LSD (which is what everyone is [absurdly] looking for).
Something not often discussed, Early MY1999 also did not yet have the onboard computer with control stalk. Always a welcome omission to see that additional nanny nuisance missing along with everything else:
Real dipstick.
Cable throttle (& cruise control).
Cable operated trunk releases.
Hydraulic steering.
No onboard computer.
No PSM.
No (50LB) glove box.
No (.5LB) cupholders.
No Variocam Plus.
(Almost) no soundproofing.
(Almost) no insulation.
MY1999 is a very, very rare and strange modern 911 indeed!
Almost like Type 996 launched with the RS version, and then Porsche just kept adding U.S. market nonsense straight thru to 2021. And counting..
That car did really well. Other than red with tan, what made this car sell for so much? Looks like it had been modded, which tends to drive the price down. Lots of owners, and average mileage.
Best,
Lots of $ chasing a limited supply has created a bull market for sports cars, and 996 are still the best bargains out there. The % increases in selling price may be large but in real dollars its not huge. People see a car going from $20k to $30k and can still get involved even though its gone up 50%, but someone wanting to buy a $100k car that is now selling for $150k, same 50% jump, is out of that market now.
Just as a year ago people were buying 996s because what else can you get for $20k that is as good as this, now just replace $20k with $30k and the comment is just as accurate.
Absolutely yes. Ferry was obsessed with MY1999 996MKI launching under 3,000lbs. It launched at 2,904lbs and Ferry died (happy!). So Weiderking started throwing everything but the kitchen sink back into 996 to appease Beverly Hills Porsche. By 997 luxury was King. By 991 Weiderking had bloated the 911 to almost 4K lbs, before his arrest and termination by the board.
That’s what makes 996 MKI, especially MY1999, so special.
Definitely know that MY 1999 owners feel that way.
I always inform people that my car is the last 911 with a cable throttle and also the lightest water cooled 911 made.
😂😂
This seemed like pretty good $$$ for a somewhat standard 996 with average/high miles.
It was 25 cars in front of mine back in February 1998
Its even lighter than that. If you’re running those original #408 BBS narrow fitment hollow spokes, then your 911 is the lightest early MY1999 911 made (under 2,900 LBS) 🤑
Those wheels are the lightest 18”+ wheels ever supplied by Porsche. The #408 1999’s truly are RS Lightweight spec. cars. Porsche should just admit that. Very, very special 911. But you already know that, because you drive it 😎.
Apparently all 996 have the OBC but not all early 99s had it enabled, and thus no 4th control stalk. Theres a relatively simple mod to install the control stalk and OPC can enable the computer. But why?? If youre driving a 1999 996 youre probably looking for more technological assistance 🤑
Apparently there are several iterations. The MKI OBC also has outside temp readout, and the functions you mention. A lot of cars have the temp readout permanently displayed, but no control stalk meaning the computer is enabled at the factory, but alternate functions not selectable. Mine is configured like this. I couldnt possibly care less about it.
I honestly dont care about the computer. With a lot of work done by previous owner, I bought my coupe 3 months ago for $18k. I have already been to 5 Porsche events and people want to buy my car for more than what I paid. My frunk sticker with options is there but a little faded. Anyway I got the original radio bought a used Nokia amp from LAD
and my car originally came with the multiple CD player but it was not there when I bought it. On top of all I was given $500 because I went to pick my car. I bought it in Wisconsin and drove it to Texas 1250 miles. My one way ticket to ohaire in Chicago was $80.27, I spent $297 driving the car home. Anyway 3,000 miles and I love it plus I have learned a lot about it.
Im stuck in the 80s rock and roll.
Do you guys know how many where built ahead of mine in March??
It still has the original #408 hollow spokes.
Im pretty sure that very few people outside of actual early 1999 owners think the early 996s are special, haha.
I was originally looking for the newest 996 in my budget but when I saw this one for sale with original 030 suspension, lsd, hardback sport seats and 18 hollow spokes I overlooked the grey interior (at least it broken up by the Natural Dark Grey trim).
Its probably the closest thing to an air cooled 911 but at 1/3 the price 🤣

Normal Guy Supercar on YouTube just made a video about this.
High demand and low supply in the used Ferrari market is really driving up prices.
He said if you see a good 458 you better act quickly.
Average speed, MPG, miles to empty, outside temp (and I might be forgetting something). No service reminder nor any chimes or chirps when driving fast.
I like having it, mainly for the outside temp.
on my trip home bought a Chinese made two way adapter for the lighter in Arkansas at a shell gas station, off course VPower 93. Then I just plug my IPhone and I have a computer next to me. Older IPhone SE gen 1, I paid nada for it. Love it because it fits in my front pocket.
You can have OBC function turned on with Durametric, but as you noted it will only show the outside temperature. There is a gentleman that makes a harness that plugs into the back of the instrument cluster so you can scroll through the other options on OBC. There are "dead" buttons next to the climate control (depending on how minimally specd the car is) that I replaced with some "light" toggle switches that can be used to cycle through the other OBC functions...., well..., could be used if ever get around to wiring it.
I am not sure how to post a picture but here is what is under the hood on the sticker of mine.
