I remember when Porsche had complete 996 crates engines on sale (were even filled with oil ) with no core cost for $6850.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Its a long story documented thru past diatribes here I have a 99 c2 6 spd roller with gearbox but no engine but the value of these cars hasnt justified another engine (I have no core). So are they now worth the added investment?

POST 2Original post

This is a word problem with not enough information to solve. Too many variables involved and lacking details.

I have to agree with your sentiment overall. Although the 996 has shown an uptick in demand in the past year, I'm afraid, considering your current situation, you wouldn't see a huge return on your investment. You could even lose money on the whole deal. Regardless if you're looking to rebuild a used engine or install a new block from Porsche, you'll be in it well over $20K just for the engine work. Of course, you could always purchase a used working engine and have it professionally installed but that doesn't give the next buyer any guarantees and may not be attractive to deep-pocket buyers. It seems people that are paying top dollar on Bring A Trailer are looking for super low miles original unmolested cars with documented service history, especially early years like your '99. What is the history and condition on your car? Photos to share?

POST 4Original post

Do what I did; put in a 3.2 boxster s engine and enjoy... I want to put a rebuilt 3.4 in someday but honestly it runs well and doesnt feel lacking.

POST 5Original post

How much do you like the car? To think of a 996 in terms of investment is rarely a winning proposition. But a well sorted, reliable one (if you do the engine the right way) will bring you many smiles per gallon. And can you put a price on that?

POST 6Original post

If you love it's worth it. You won't ever recoup the cost of building one for it.

POST 7Original post

Search for a used engine and have the bores scoped. Install. Pray for the best. And enjoy the car.

I remember when Porsche had complete 996 crates engines on sale (were even filled with oil ) with no core cost for $6850. We won't ever see that again !!!

POST 9Original post

I picked up mine last year with a donor engine installed in it. Numerous problems to be sorted, but I have managed to make it a daily driver. Hoping I can enjoy it a while more before I have to put an eninge in it.

POST 10Original post

What are you willing to spend to get it running ?

It sounds like your roller is a perfect candidate for this: http://www.renegadehybrids.com/

POST 12Original post

An LS swap will be about 20K all in. Nearly any way you slice it, swapping in a 3.4 is going to be much cheaper. Depending on price this one finishes at, may be worthwhile (you'll need to scavenge parts to complete the long block): https://www.pcarmarket.com/auction/r...ra-long-block/

Huh, a failed AOS was the cause of the engine failure, imagine that !!!

POST 14Original post

You know I've often thought what would the HP difference would be especially if you put all the top end of a 996 on a boxster 3.2 short motor , could be another option of your engine has exploded!

Ive seen dyno plots for modded 3.2 engines with intake and exhausts in the 240-250hp range which starts getting into the realm of a stock 3.4. Of course thats a peak number and dynos are all different, and truthfully Ive never seen a modded 3.2 plot against a stock 3.4 from the same dyno and day. I suspect the 3.2 is peakier in arriving at that number with less torque. But its funny you how often people say you shouldnt mod a car because you dont know better than the manufacturer but the 3.2 is a great example of the manufacturer leaving quite a bit on the table seemingly on purpose. By all accounts the only difference for the engine blocks are the piston diameter and a slight change in compression for the 3.4 to 3.2. But the stock exhaust pipes and intake runners that are on the 3.2 are the same as what comes on the 2.7 engine.

Shhhhhh. Stop telling people about the Boxster swap! I like when the masses pass over this engine. I prefer them thinking it's a huge downgrade! Helps keep prices down for me!! :-P

POST 17Original post

I think byprodriver still has a rebuilt engine. You should check it out. Rebuilt engine

POST 18Original post

The difference between the 3.2 and the 3.4 is about 20hp, hardly noticeable.

Porsche prices crack me up sometimes. Something you think would be 10k+ is way under and then something like a new shift **** is really expensive or that plastic frunk bin they came out with recently which is basically a plastic tote with PORSCHE on it is almost $200. I remember when the ROW M030 was relatively cheap for what it was and then it doubled in price. Seems nuts to be a 996 crate engine was at one time under $7k with no core charge.

At one point Volkswagen had crate 12 valve VR6 engines on sale for $189. Not a typo: one hundred eighty nine dollars. That was after VW discontinued factory support for the 12V VR, around 2008 or 2012 or so - memory is foggy on that.
