Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.
0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Yes, I've searched, but most threads/posts are going back a few years and some call out bad experiences and some conflict with positive ones. Anyway, my '98 996 C2 manual has the dreadful whine, which I can only assume is the pinion bearing on its way out. I can DIY remove the gearbox myself, but rebuilding is a bit beyond my patience and time (and space for a massive press!)
Has anyone had a gearbox rebuild recently and can offer any positive reviews?
I'm on the east coast, but I guess I'll have have to swallow the freight costs.
That would be a 27 years old gearbox? Your chances of getting out of the gearbox with just a pinion bearing replaced is zero. Gearsets, syncros, hubs, slider are exceedingly expensive for replacement. Finding someone who has done it before and who stands behind the work is possible, but that comes with long wait time, shipping back and forth, and can be expensive.
Have you thought of going down to the local dealer and ask for a large discount on a factory gearbox? The advertised price from Suncoast Porsche is $12.5K complete. (I think they want the core back). The advantage of that approach is...
The dealer pays the shipping fee.
You pick it up locally.
It comes with a factory warranty.
Wait time is whatever it takes to order from Germany (2-6 weeks?)
And you might end up spending $12K for a rebuild anyway.
I agree with yelcab. At least 2nd and 3rd will need replacing. Bushings on selectors are worn, etc. Gbox is considered the best of the nationwide service providers. Vertex sells reconditioned units for what was a decent price last year. I don’t know the current cost. Last year, Gbox quoted me ~$8,000 for a rebuild and LSD. Vertex cost me around $5,000. I have no issues after several thousand miles of driving with the Vertex supplied box.
Gbox has an absolutely terrible reputation with the G50 gearboxes fwiw. Given how simple a G50 is to work on....

There's an outfit in CT whose name I can't remember that is supposed to be quite good.
Yeh u have posted several times that there have been a lot of issues with gbox outside if the standard 996 box. Do your research and actually talk with people that have had work done. There was a thread a few months ago with several good builders if u do a search.
I would also not jump to a conclusion on the cost of rebuild until its open. There r a lot of things that u can replace "while u r in there" but a lot of of it doesnt have to be done. These boxes r duarable.
Hopefully not completely off topic but I remember a thread a while ago that talked about the 997.1 possibly bolting up to the 996? Does anyone know? Maybe just with the 996.2?
That's a surprisingly good price for a new one from a dealer.
I'm keenly interested in what you decide to do. I'm not far behind you in the same journey.
Kevin has offered his knowledge regarding the transmissions. It is appreciated. I do not know of anyone who has used his work but would be interested to hear.
I went with gbox. Its been 3 years, ~5k miles since, and its been great. They also replaced the transmission mount while it was there. No issues - its a bit notchy until warmed up, but amazing thus far. Reasonable price, I felt. Thumbs up from me.
