I will check the 02 Sensors but they all do look OEM and run in the proper order and never messed with at first glance, but good advice, thanks

I just came in from the garage after changing that exact part, she is running perfectly with no CEL!

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Vacuum line was off fuel pressure sending unit on passenger side of car, reinstalled no change
Morning All,
I am the new owner of a 2001 996 C4. 3.4L, Manual (109K miles ) in my dream spec Forest green on natural Brown BUT. with some odd problems. After days of internet searching, I can not find an exact similar occurrence to reference so Im hoping to get some help from you folks here smarter than me on this platform with "what would you do if you were me" ,lol.
The facts when I got the car;
RMS/clutch was done
Oil fill tube is cracked and taped (vacuum leak)
Vacuum line was off fuel pressure sending unit on passenger side of car, reinstalled no change
was 2 quarts low on oil when I got it, did oil change and symptoms did improve slightly.
Coolant reservoir is cracked and leaking
Coil packs and plugs done 2021
the quick and dirty of it;
Car starts and runs fine, when it warms up engine light comes on and flashes, car feels and sounds like it is misfiring. but it drives fine, feels like decent power and lights go off when you drive away. only on when idling.
Pull codes and get P1397, P0300, P304,P305,P306. I can clear them , restart the car, lights are off then after a few minutes of idling they come back on (flashing), wait another minute or so and the car "fixes itself" lights go off, then another minute and lights come back on and it misfires. This is after the oil change. before oil change it would stay misfiring while idling and never "fix itself"
I only have an Icarsoft Porsche scanner currently but after running live data I noticed also the short term fuel trims are complete out of whack where bank 1 is -25% and bank 2 is +25% at idle.
SO my question is, is this a drop the motor and do the chains, variocam etc etc, or is there maybe something simple i'm missing like clogged cats, or maf/02 sensors etc? any insight would be appreciated!
Thanks!!
You got the oil fill pipe taped up yet asking for diagnosis?
Free advice, fix oil fill pipe and anything similar then see what you got...
Also make sure the O2 Sensors are wired correctly, ( fuel trims at opposite ends)
Thanks for your reply
@Porschetech3
but I was simply stating the facts of how I got the car to better help explain the situation.
The cracked oil fill tube is certainly not causing a cam position sensor to fault I would think, so before doing several individual jobs with the engine in the car which is arguably harder, I was seeking advice to determine if the P1397 code always means remove engine, do chains etc variocam sensor etc? I of course would fix everything such as the oil fill tube, the AOS, the coolant tank etc. etc. if the engine has to come out.
I was just hoping folks like your self could provide some experience to us newbies with some tricks you have learning along the way so I could enjoy the car for few miles before the big winter project. If maybe you had seen a similar issue in the past and it was XYZ etc I could fix that and then do the fill tube and coolant tank with the engine in the car etc.
I will check the 02 Sensors but they all do look OEM and run in the proper order and never messed with at first glance, but good advice, thanks
Rule of thumb is when the CEL is flashing, don't drive the car. Fix the problem. Solid CEL, means you can still drive the car to the shop. There is no way to enjoy this car "for the summer" unless you get the CEL to stop coming up. At least the Cam position sensor on bank 2 is relatively easier to get to with engine in.

100% agree on the flashing Cell and not driving on it, etc. Thanks!
I just could not decipher whether the P1397 code was the variocam solenoid/sensor which from I read is an engine out or if the cam sensor (engine in) you mentioned is all it might need. Too further my confusion, I thought the bank 2 cam sensor was on the front of the engine, passenger side but it does not seem to have one there? so then I read I may have a euro spec engine with only one cam sensor? Thanks for your help!
Well I am not one who pulls the engine at most any repair or just doing cams on the 996.1 and is why I suggested to fix what you can in a progression...
On a 996.1 I only pull the engine if the heads have to come off the engine......Vario-cam, AOS/UAOS , coolant tanks, injectors, Vaccum leaks I would never pull the engine for that. So you may find someone else advice more helpful...
I just came in from the garage after changing that exact part, she is running perfectly with no CEL! Thanks! Really appreciate the help gents. Now to get the oil fill tube and coolant tank switched out, always something to do, lol. Thanks again.
