Suggestion

I think it's good to have closer gear ratios to maintain good torque but also you can't only focus on changing gears; there are other things that need attention and enjoyment.

But in a street car that has trouble finding space to use 4th gear...and more trouble finding where to drive in 5th and 6th...what does one do with 7th?

Suggestion

Like others have said though, 7th would be a rarely used gear for many people.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thinking about the new 7 speed manual trans, I can't help wondering, besides squeezing a couple of tenths mpg out of the car, if it really has any value and might not even been pure overkill. Yes 5 was better than 4 and 6 is somewhat nicer than 5...but 7 seems to be reaching for it. In a PDK racing box 7 gears makes sense...sometimes. But in a street car that has trouble finding space to use 4th gear...and more trouble finding where to drive in 5th and 6th...what does one do with 7th?

POST 2Original post

7th is for highway cruising only. The 991 top speed is attained in 6th. My Audi SQ5 has an 8-speed transmission!

POST 3Original post

I think 7 is too much. I think it's good to have closer gear ratios to maintain good torque but also you can't only focus on changing gears; there are other things that need attention and enjoyment. My Macan has a 7 speed tranny but when in Sport mode it rarely chooses to go into 7th unless I switch the Sport mode off. Agree with Dennis that 7th is pretty much for highway cruising.

POST 4Original post

80mph in 6th gear runs the revs at 3000 on this engine. Seeing as 2500 revs is a comfortable cruise with this engine a 7th gear seems like a nice addition so the engine would cruise at 2500 doing 80mph in 7th gear. Most times when I am in a 70 zone I cruise at just under the 80mph. Off the highway, I rarely hit the 5th gear. I try never to let the revs drop below 2200 under any driving condition. Like you say John it seems like an overkill especially in the States. A great help on the German Autobahns though where most of the road has no speed limit anyway. .

POST 5Original post

Just imagine how nice it would be to be on the Autobahns with the Porsche effortlessly cruising as fast as you feel safe. We have a few roads where it should be that way but it isn't. I already have gotten a ticket over a 100 mph and could have went to jail. At 130 my car feels like it would go all day without a problem.

POST 6Original post

I would enjoy a seventh gear in my Cayman. In 6th, it is turning about 3000RPM at about 65 which is unnecessarily high. Like others have said though, 7th would be a rarely used gear for many people.

6th gear? That's where I start considering 4th

7 and 8 gear/speed trannies aren't for the driver, they are for the gas mileage and emissions tests.

If you are tracking the car... Yeh I agree. I have taken mine to 105mph in 3rd. That's not "cruising". That's what I call revving the **** out of the engine.

POST 10Original post

My Vet does over 25 mpg in 7th cruising at 80mph with the rpm just below 2k. I rarely go into 7th but it comes in handy when driving to vegas. Leaves you with more money to spend it on blow and hookers.

POST 11Original post

Much needed extra gearing for highway mpg. One area that 911's suffer in badly.

POST 13Original post

The current generation of Chrysler automatics have 9 gears. And a CVT transmission (the original ones) actually have an infinite number of ratios. In fact, owners were complaining so fiercely about the "motorboating" effect of the original CVTs, that in current ones the transmissions are programmed to stick with a particular "gear" so as to give the driver the feeling they are actually in "gear".

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So in retrospect...what are your current opinions of the tiptronics found in the 964 and 993 compared to that in the 996 before pdk?

POST 15Original post

I haven't driven a 996 or 997 with a Tiptronic. My Cayenne S had a 6-speed Tiptronic S transmission and it was very well suited to that vehicle. I imagine that it's pretty good in the 911 also. I've heard very good things about it in the 997 TT. The newer versions of the transmission can be tuned to shift very crisply. The 8-speed in my Audi (which I believe is essentially the same as the Tiptronic) shifts faster than the PDK shifted in the Macan S Diesel that I rented in Europe last fall.

Junk. If you have to drive an autotragic, the mk2 '02+ tips are the better ones to get as they are more sophisticated and have more shift maps available.

POST 17Original post

I think most folks would be disappointed to find out just how much of the autobahn really is a no-speed-limit extravaganza...and how irritating it is to be stuck in traffic on one of those stretches. The 996 redlines (or very nearly redlines) @ 150MPH in 5th, and it's amazing how hard the engine is working to overcome air resistance at that speed. Most of the 7+ gear cars don't have enough power to wind out all of the overdriven gears to redline. It's all about making emissions/economy numbers for the EPA that you'll NEVER actually see unless you hypermile like a damn Prius owner.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 12290569

The Tiptronic in the 996 was pretty good as automatics go, particularly compared to other auto boxes of the day. I actually enjoyed the Tip that I had to a good extent, but the only reason I had the Tip was for my wife's sake. I'm sure a manual would have made the car much more enjoyable for me. I have not driven a Tip in a 964 or 993, but I understand that they are essentially the same trans as the 996.1 Tip with one fewer gear and perhaps less shift programming. But little changes like these can make a big difference in how the experience goes. The performance penalty will likely be greater with a 4 speed Tip vs a 5 speed Tip. The 996.2 Tip was improved, mostly in shift programming, as the manufacturer was changed.

I drove a 991 C4S cabriolet on the Autobahn last fall. I drove into Stuttgart on a bank holiday, and I was told by the locals that commercial truck traffic was therefore not allowed on the Autobahn. I didn't see any trucks, and traffic was light enough that I was able to hit 265 kph. I believe that I achieved this speed in 5th gear. The engine was working very hard, although it definitely felt like there was enough power to keep accelerating easily. I had to slow down due to traffic.

POST 20Original post

One stretch of my drive to Berlin from Amsterdam was interrupted due to a trucking accident - second truck failed to notice a slow-moving or stopped container hauler in his lane and underwent unplanned, rapid deceleration. The cab, crushed between the container in front and whatever he was hauling in the box behind, was no more than a foot thick. Needless to say, I was very diligent about looking as far ahead as possible for the rest of that day. On those haul-*** parts of the road, cars get big in a hurry. The bank holiday sounds like a nice way to do the Autobahn. Midweek on a work day sucked a lot more.
