Full Disclosure: I'm actually half-heartedly searching for a Cayenne to replace the wife's 9-7x (which is another SUV that should be ashamed of itself).

It was really how much worse those drivers were than me (it was a class, not an event) as I've run the 996 before and know it can do much better than they were doing, but it is still amazing what Porsche has made that P!g capable of doing.

If you must......Buy a hard top then you can run the car through the car wash for under body blast.

I did use RaggTopp protectant for the top before the first snow hit and the salt never stuck, even when on the freeways with trucks kicking up nasty stuff around me.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone,
I just got the Porsche I've always wanted. An 01 Carrera 4. It is black on black, convertible, automatic.
I live in a snowy area and wondered if I should drive it in inclement weather? I worry about the soft top and salt rusting the body. Any experience with daily winter driving?
Any help is appreiciated!
My wife's 01 C4 coupe has lived its entire life outside and we drive it year round. They love salt in my area and there is no sign of anything more than surface rust of the bare metal parts. As long as the nose can clear the snow the C4 will go anywhere you want it.
Can't speak directly to the top obviously, but there are a 986.1 and 987.1 that live near me and also live outside. Both still have their original tops. No idea how much comparability between the 911 and Boxter tops though.
I drove my C4S cab through the past winter and had no particular issues with salt thus far. I did use RaggTopp protectant for the top before the first snow hit and the salt never stuck, even when on the freeways with trucks kicking up nasty stuff around me.
I also hosed down the undercarriage most nights in my garage. Don't know if that helps, but it certainly made me feel better.
If there's a nicer weekend, wash it!
i live in the NorthEast and used my car as my daily driver this winter. I picked up a hardtop and winter tires/wheels for very little money. It's money VERY well spent. Search craigslist, it's out there. You're going to love driving your 911 in the winter. You'll smile at all the strange looks you get.
Congrats! There are no issues with driving your Porsche in winter conditions. Take care of it and protect it like you would with any car and you'll be fine. Proper winter tires are a must!
Enjoy!
Mines a DD year round, correct winter tires a must.
This was the second winter for me and still looks good no rust that I see under it,
But I do need new winter tires before snow flys again. Two winters and my rear tires are done.
Drive it and enjoy it. That's what they are made for.

on the gas pedal... Welcome to the board. Oh and I agree with John, lay those ladders on their side.
FWIW, my dentist, who makes too much money since he has 3 Porsches (Boxter S, Cayenne, and '00 996 convertible), regularly mocks me for storing my '00 996 in the winter while he drives his all year round.
He didn't do so when I was there a couple of months ago, turns out his power steering lines corroded through, his shop can't find parts high and low, so the car has been out of commission for well over a month while they continue to source for parts.
Winter tires, undercar wash often, and common sense if you do drive this car in the winter.
Hello and welcome. Would you please move the yellow ladder at the next opportunity? I had a ladder fall on a car of mine and it is painfull what they do to the paint.
Welcome Francesca. If you're here regularly, be sure to develop thick skin.
For example, some people might see a cabriolet & automatic being owned by a lady and use that fact as an excuse to mock all of the guys with automatics or cabriolets or, God forbid, both autos and cabs.
Or someone might make a snide remark something like "Were they out of Boxsters at the car lot?" (Some people might, but of course not me
)
But, don't take it too seriously - it's all in good fun.
And I daily drove my 996 through the last two winters - it did great and always cleaned up nicely.
BTW, as you can tell from my pics, I'm a fan of the black on black and the Carrera 4. Black is tough to keep clean, but gorgeous when it is clean. That is a beautiful car you have there. Enjoy!
I appreciate all of the feedback from everyone. The ladder has been removed to a safer place away from my car. I look forward to using it all summer and won't worry about the winter driving--except for the one post about corrosion of lines.
If she can get through the GWITF thread she'll do fine
As if I needed more photo evidence to remind me that I'm still pissed at you for selling your car under the table without posting your intentions first
That one is a slightly older twin to ours and a second would be nice to have.
I'm indifferent on a winter driver...
On one hand in a few years after my C2 is paid off I want to get a high mile beater C4 as a winter car.
On the other hand, there is a lot of salt and crap on the roads here and it's hard enough on regular cars that have regular prices to replace regular parts - these cars sometimes don't have regular parts and can be expensive if something goes out. That and with the engine right there, body panels so low, it just wouldn't be a great car to drift around a corner and find a curb...
I'm with others on the underbody wash stuff.
For the record, the next morning the 911 backed out of the spot (in summer tires!) with the snow behind it just knocked down to below the bumper. The Cayenne next to it, however, spun for a second before remembering that it should be ashamed of itself
To be fair, the Cayenne's tires were at the end of their useful life after a day of AutoX + 20k miles. It's the diesel too so it wants to apply more torque at 1700 RPM than the 996 can even make. Still embarrassing though...
There, FIFY.
Full Disclosure: I'm actually half-heartedly searching for a Cayenne to replace the wife's 9-7x (which is another SUV that should be ashamed of itself).
You only think it should be ashamed of itself because you haven't really driven one. Take one out for a day of AutoX and then try to convince me that you aren't impressed
On that given day, it also out performed all the non-tuned air-cooled cars and 996s much to (I'm sure) the displeasure of the twits making derogatory comments to my back in the morning. It was really how much worse those drivers were than me (it was a class, not an event) as I've run the 996 before and know it can do much better than they were doing, but it is still amazing what Porsche has made that P!g capable of doing.
Absolutely no argument there Alp. Trailblazer parts are way cheaper than 9-7x parts yet somehow they always seem to be interchangeable!
The question at the moment is which comes first - a P!g or a 996tt? Hope to have one of each by Halloween.
I do insist it has a right to that gold shield
I bought mine on the back of (then) 12 years of minimal costs on the 996 and in 2.5 years it's just been in for minor and self inflicted stuff. My goal is at least 8 years, but hopefully longer. Of course getting a used one is as big a game of chance as a used 996. If it had a good PO that loved it, you'll probably have a good truck. If not, there are some good horror stories. Come on over to the Cayenne forum and everyone will be happy to enlighten you. We could use a little 996 forum personality over too (it's no 997 or 993 crowd, but it's definitely mostly business...
I appreciate her 996. I love my P!g

LOL! You degenerates...from asking a simple question about how safe the car is driving in the winter to...ta da..put mud tires on a panamera turbo! Wow, she'll never come back. Poor Francesca.
