The tech cleaned the block, and replacing the IMS and the IMSB and a couple of chain guide rails (the plastic had been busted up some from the chain play) and that is all.

(Not an engine, but my 996 Turbo's 6-speed was replaced with a factory sourced new 6-speed for just a selector shaft leak.

The fine print as I remember states that Porsche can use a mix of new, used, rebuilt parts to repair the car under warranty, all at its discretion.

As I recall the recommendation is to if one is going to replace the IMSB to first expose the bearing and verify which one it is then order the correct replacement bearing.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Any ideas, as this will come from Stuttgart I presume the latest?

POST 2Original post

Don't think anyone can really answer that without having a look. Whatever bearing type is handy when the engine is reassembled is my WAG. And the IMSB might not even be replaced during the remanufacturing. Some engines are removed and sent to the factory on rather the smallest of pretenses. (Not an engine, but my 996 Turbo's 6-speed was replaced with a factory sourced new 6-speed for just a selector shaft leak. The techs assured me had the tranny not been covered by the CPO warranty they could have "rebuilt" the thing and cured that leak. But the factory paid for the removal of the old tranny and the the installation of the new tranny.) Could be just a noisy lifer or something less serious than something deeper in the engine. If the engine internals are free of any debris from the trouble the iMSB and other internal engine hardware could be left undisturbed, so whatever the engine came with from the engine factory remains in service when it comes of the the remanufacturing department.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was told that a remamanufactured engine is all new (or remanufactured) parts except the block and heads??

POST 5Original post

No. Just going by what I've been told by techs who of course believe they know. As I understand it even "new" engines are not all they seem to be. That is as we have gathered from this IMSB business just because a car is say a 2001 doesn't mean it has the same IMSB as all other 2001 MY cars. As I recall the recommendation is to if one is going to replace the IMSB to first expose the bearing and verify which one it is then order the correct replacement bearing. Anyhow, I can believe them. (And what they tell me agrees with my experiences in other similar situations.) While everyone wants to believe the remanufactured engine is totally gone through and everything refreshed/replaced that is probably not likely as Porsche is as concerned about costs as any company. (At a dealer, this a few years back, I came upon a 996 engine apart to be repaired. It has suffered a failed IMSB. The tech cleaned the block, and replacing the IMS and the IMSB and a couple of chain guide rails (the plastic had been busted up some from the chain play) and that is all. He never even bothered to measure the bearing clearances, check the bores and pistons for wear, etc. He told me -- I asked -- that he was operating under guidelines from the factory, which were probably put together by the factory techs who had gone through this, developed this, by doing the same thing with returned engines.) And IIRC it agrees with the fine print in the car's warranty booklet. The fine print as I remember states that Porsche can use a mix of new, used, rebuilt parts to repair the car under warranty, all at its discretion.

POST 6Original post

Please don't use the "as I remember and I heard it from so and so" excuse. Unless you have proof and a solid one at that, please stop posting things as this is how myths turn into "facts". I can easily see a tech telling you whatever you want to hear or whatever it takes to get you to leave him alone when he is busy working on something. Last thing they need is an annoying "nosy" customer hitting them with 20 questions every time his car in for a service. You mile long replies that have "every possibly under the sun" is anything but useful to those that actually do their own wrenching. Listing everything in the hope that something will "stick" is not what I would call a helpful suggestion to someone that is looking for help fixing their car. I told you this before but you keep going back writing your 500 word essay replies anyways. Post one or two solid possibilities of what the fix would be and leave the other 900 out of it.

Till further notice there are no heads! Porsche AG is remanufacturing M96 shortblocks with the only IMS they have, the last design with the largest diameter IMSB.

Which, in the case of the IMSB, has not changed since 2006 for any new, or reman engine of M96/ M97 origin.
