Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Test window this morning' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair /' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Would this be the whole regulator, or is there a mechanical attachment that came lose that simply needs to be reattached without replacing the entire regulator?

I've been procrastinating on getting into the doors to replace the stock speaker with a new enclosure and Focal mid-bass speaker (from Car Audio Inovations specific for the 996).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This might be related to my recent fun with the cab top hydraulic fluid being low. The top died on the way down, so I left it there, and when I brought it back up to access the pump, I had to manually pull it closed to get the clamshell to latch. I did notice the driver's side window wouldn't auto-power all the way up (stopped half way) so I cycled it to the top by holding the button, then held the button for 10 extra seconds, then did the same down, held it there, and then back up, and held the button. Now the auto up and down work fine, but it doesn't do the 1/4" drop when I go to open the door.
My replacement fluid and syringe won't get here until tomorrow, so I have no idea if there's more window/top sensors that are going to be wonky or not (or what to do if they are), but I thought I'd check in here about this one first.
There is a microswitch on the interior door handle and one microswitch for the exterior door handle that work to drop the window when opening/closing. Have to pull the door panel to replace them.
Tested the window this morning. It doesn't pre-drop when either the inside or outside handle is engaged, but I do hear the brief 'whrr' of what I assume is the mechanism that's supposed to drop the window that 1/2" prior to opening.
Either way now I assume I'll need to get into the door panel, but does anyone have experience with this to know if it's just a manual reattachment of something, or am I likely looking at a part to be replaced?
Open the window a bit and use your hand to push down on it. If it moves then the window regulator has slop in it and probably also needs to be replaced.
Update:
While the door was open and the window all the way up, I was able to easily push the window down just slightly (the normal drop distance when opening the door), and then when I closed the door it automatically closed the small gap as it always should. Opening from either inside or out and I can hear the mechanism activate to do the slight window opening, but no window movement. Push the window back down the 1/4", and then it goes back as normal when closed.
Would this be the whole regulator, or is there a mechanical attachment that came lose that simply needs to be reattached without replacing the entire regulator?
The cables in the regulator get old and stretch resulting in the slop and no window drop. Get an original Porsche OE regulator. I don't remember the place but there is an outfit that rebuilds regulators better than new. Maybe someone else remembers or you could do a search.

I have had success with adding tension to the mechanism using a spacer (can be a zip tie or bicycle cable tensioner). There are quite a few articles that go over this. If you are going to try that route, before placing the spacer on, I would make sure you push down on the window so it is set to the right spot. Both of my windows needed this adjustment and bought me some time before having to purchase new regulators which are pricey.
Yeah it was pretty straight forward. You'll have to remove the speaker if you have one and the weather/rain protection carefully to get access. You'll then look for slack in the small green (in red in picture)plastic cable holders. If you can easily pull this green piece out of its holding spot, that means you have too much slack in the system and need a spacer there. You can get creative but will need something that can be placed without cutting the cable of course.
I used something like this which already had a pre cut slot. Its been a few weeks now and it is working well on both doors
