I did floor mats, shift **** & gaiter, center console, horseshoe and replaced the 4 spoke gray steering wheel with a 3 spoke black sport wheel.

For me, (big feet), the ability to adjust positions would be nice.

Suggestion
Years ago I put in graphite grey GT3 leather seats, black rollbar with blue racing harnesses, and added black aluminum Rennline floor pads to replace the removable grey carpet pads.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My car is Graphite Gray inside.
I have the carbon package. It adds enough black contrast that it's not a "sea of gray". The instrument surround and the center stack are black as well as the horizontal trim strip across the lower dash. And I have a carbon steering wheel, shift ****, and brake handle that are part black too.
I am going to paint the center console the car's color Midnight Blue as soon as I have a chance. I dislike the soft-touch paint there as it gets carved up too easily.
First thing is black mats, the rest is "Sea of Gray". It can look good for someone more refined than myself but I'm old, (school) and looking for more sports car focus. (See exterior above.)
Lucky you. No carbon here. This is about as gray as they come. Again, not necessarily bad for a proper gentleman but this here is a scrappy kind of 996 at this point. And I mean that in a good way.
My car was also a sea of (graphite) gray when I bought it. I did floor mats, shift **** & gaiter, center console, horseshoe and replaced the 4 spoke gray steering wheel with a 3 spoke black sport wheel.
I got a mat that covers the rear seat backs when theyre down. I wish I hadnt picked red for the lettering though because there is nothing else red anywhere on the car so it looks a little out of place.
My Turbo has a Savanna interior and I had the same complaint. It was
all
Savanna. I swapped out the carpet for black and it made a huge difference. If you keep you eyes peeled in the marketplace and on Ebay, you can get everything you need for well under $1000. I stumbled onto a few really good deals and I think it only ended up costing around $500 to do mine.
Before (aside from being all beige, it was really dirty as well):
During:
After:
I got it from
German Ebay
. They've gone up in price by a few bucks and shipping is a little more then when I purchased in 2017. If you check out his store, he has some different styles too.
It made a HUGE difference. Aside from less beige, the Savanna carpet just doesn't age well in these cars and fades quite a bit which makes the interior look dated.
Not shown in the pictures is black carpet on the lower part of the door panels and I also refinished my center console. Finding beige door cards with black carpet is nearly impossible, but this carpet I found on Amazon is an exceptionally close match to the color and texture of the factory black carpet:

Here is said carpet on my sub enclosure. The contrast with the factory carpet is a combo of sun fading and the camera doing weird things. In person it's practically indistinguishable from the factory carpet.
You see Randy, if my gray was as good as yours things could go a different way, but it's not. Sadly. How did your interior come to be that plush? Very tasty.
Its amazing how much a nice shift **** and wheel can change a ride. When I had my 986S, I just never loved the ****. Typical shift **** in 2000. Seen it in 996 base and turbos. Felt plastic and nothing special visually. I bought one off eBay and just loved the difference. The feel had texture and the leather of the boot was much nicer. I think I paid like 150 for it. The new to me 996 came with a crested shift **** that had much better feel.
Regarding the steering wheel, my son just put a MOMO on his Miata. I took for a ride yesterday and just thought it was the cats meow. The texture of the leather had much nicer grip and something about the smaller wheel. My friend just got the leather on a Mercedes Benz steering wheel done, it had the same MOMO texture. Maybe another option. These cars are best when personalized in my opinion. Not the best idea financially but a Porsche never is. Good luck.
Digging that black and savannah combo. Now I am thinking that is something I need to do myself. I would imagine in a cab it wouldn't be that bad of a job since its so open to work on the interior. Only thing I would worry about would if something came up and I needed to sell it would this be a turn off for people?
My Seal grey 2001 C2 also has the sea of grey graphite interior. I made a couple changes that were easy and make a difference.
1. Seat inserts in pepita/houndstooth (PO did it, and I really like them).
2. Double DIN stereo (doesn't really change the ratio of grey:black, but modernizes the interior far more than expected.
3. Leather diamond footwell covers front/back in black with silver stitching. They cover pretty much 100% of the graphite carpet.
The last certainly isn't for everyone, but my plan was to strip out the carpeting and create a HPDE/AX competitor. The idea was to pop these footwell covers in for street driving and out for track. Realized that turning the C2 into a dual street/track car wasn't efficient, so bought a 6GT3. But I like the interior in the C2 for daily driving. YMMV.
I pulled the center console out and sprayed black with Plastidip. Also sprayed the ignition bezel. Works well on any of your plastic pieces, will cover those claw marks on the horseshoe. With the black floor mats I was able to get rid of enough grey for me.
I bought some dark blue floor mats from the dealer to cover the gray. They are darker than they appear in the photos but they are mismatched and the stitching is also mismatched. not sure I want to keep them because it will bug me.
if you magnify the image you can see the differences in the stitching. buying from the dealer thought I would not have problems, but definitely not a properly matched pair.
I've lost track of who did what.
If it bothered me, I would paint the center console black, Aluminum pedals and buy the German shift **** with black leather, grey stitch. I had one of those ***** in my boxster. Replaced the **** that you have. You can go totally nuts but that cost money. Depends how far you want to go.
I like the grey you have.
You might have meant to tag someone else? However, my Targa is Natural Brown and is a LOT of brown. The car came originally with black mats but browns were in it when I bought it. Thinking of switching back to the black in order to tone it down.
Well the center stack was a lot of gray, a lot of shoddy gray in comparison to some of the other gray interiors here. And since I am going toward a darker look the center console got worked.
Dark with subtle Metropol blue accents. No more claw marks.
The side panels for the lower stack are now replaced with an unusual sport package option black diamond pattern you don't see very often, achieving a more industrial/mechanical feel. Cleaned up pretty good compared to the gray soft touch in the upper photos.
I wasn't expecting much because of the price but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. And just to clarify, it's the ****, gaiter and bezel as a unit.
I got it from Lloyd Mats.
lol, I'm not even a hat guy. I was going for a sunroof/windows open drive and I was overdue for a haircut and just grabbed the closest hat on the rack.
Obligatory gratuitous pic of the M5

Hi all
I have graphite grey interior with black mats but I am Old school and the car came with factory mats. If anyone has a spare set hit me up. Id like to drown in a sea of grey.
[QUOTE=85eurocarrera;17168776]
Nice. Do you have the airbag light on, or were you able to figure out the right resistor setup? If so, what did you use?
[QUOTE=barbancourt;17206513]
I have no airbag lights with my MOMO steering wheel.
I used the resistor that I got from Gert.
I've seen the resistance required posted online.
I got it from Lloyd Mats. [quote]
Can you tell us Lloyd’s item number for rear mat? Believe I have same woofer box you do in rear, not complete info there for size?
Hey, I thought they were no longer making these. It's not clear what the difference would be for a 996. For me, (big feet), the ability to adjust positions would be nice.
I don't think I've seen any pics of this on a 996; only air cooled stuff. The Rennline is the only other adjustable pedal that comes to mind; something I've also been thinking about getting.
Well, looks like it's going to be just fine. I don't know what difference the 996 specific pedal has because this already seems peachy. Comes with patina too. Just about all I have time for these days but already working on tweaking the position, as if that might help me, but actually I think it will. My 964 really benefited from pedal work. I re-bushed the cluster and built up the go fast pedal and it brought me joy...
Kind of hard to see but I have black coco mats with a beige pattern and a momo **** on a schnell shirt shifter. The mats do a good job of breaking up the beige but brining things together as well.
I have a seal grey exterior and graphite grey interior. Years ago I put in graphite grey GT3 leather seats, black rollbar with blue racing harnesses, and added black aluminum Rennline floor pads to replace the removable grey carpet pads. It's added just enough contrast to break up a sea of grey.
One of these days I will figure out what to do with the center consol, horse shoe around the radio and the side air vents. I'll either paint them or carbon fiber. Probably paint thru bumper plug, but haven't figured out what color. To everybody's points, a little contrast goes a long way.
Weather has been warming up in Chicago so I plan on cleaning up the car this week and i'll send some pictures to compare and contrast.
Did you paint your rear console or is it factory? I have Natural Brown interior and have been contemplating painting mine as a way to break up all the brown. It would be Polar Silver to match the exterior.
Car interior is a little dirty. But the sea of grey is broken up by black aluminum track mats from renn line and the blue harness straps. Also has black roll bar that isn't in the picture. Love the track mats. They clean up very fast and have a better feel than carpet under your feet. Easier to heel toe shift.
Bill- thanks, Im a fan of the coco mats so far.
That is how I got the car and Ive never given it much thought. The door handles have some silver that matches but then a bunch of the trim as you see is plain black. Hmmm.
JBari,
Like that you painted your center consol as well as horseshoe. A couple of questions: what color did you use? What is the exterior paint on your car? Who did you use to paint the interior parts? What would you do differently the next time.
I have a seal grey exterior and graphite gray interior and still after 19 years haven't settled on what to do with the console, horseshoe and air ducts.
I like the segmented horseshoes. It is subtle yet allows more interest. Looks much better after I got the soft touch off. the top section is black, middle section is textured, and bottom is Metropol blue. Now the grey is not so overwhelming. Also did Metropol blue Gauge binnacle that you can partially see. Not sure I will keep it.
Yes, I'm kind of partial to color matching with a painted version. Alternatives would include black, carbon or alcantara but I like the color splash. Carbon's not me at this point.
