So, I've got all the bulb replaced, all but one are functional and I'm scratching my head.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just bought a pair of Litronics headlights for my 996 thinking that it was a simple plug and play replacement. Is that the case, or is it more complicated?
Mk1 or Mk2 makes a difference
This may be impactful to you too.

I just switched out the units which are single xeon, not bi-xeon and they appear to be plug and play. The xeon lights worked and the high beams came on with the halogens when I moved the stalk forwards. Looks like I have a bunch of bulbs to buy, but otherwise I think things are working.
I'm a little confused about the self leveling function I've read about - can't tell if that applies to my lights or not. Am I missing anything being considered?
A level driveway and a garage door will work. Pull car up close to the garage door and mark where the light output is on the garage door with painters tape. Back up car 15 to 20 feet and see if the light pattern falls within the painters tape squares. If it does, all is well and you won't be blinding other drivers at night.
IMHO<, The lights are much kinder to other traffic with the leveler.. I set mine when I have the front just a little up-hill when I'll be in town a lot..
Hey Wayne, I hope you and your family are doing well. I'm glad to see you still have your 996. After so many years of ownership, it is a challenge finding new mods to do to our cars.
great to see you too! Not too many of us 1st and 2nd generation 996 owners left in here. Glad to see you still here! Do you still have yours? Any new salvage projects since the maserati?
I know what you mean about mods. I view my car as pretty much perfect, but its funny that as the car has moved to classic status i see fewer people hating our headlights, so I figured that a litronics upgrade might be nice, considering that my car came from the first owner with Ruf headlight covers installed... maybe its time to enjoy the stock headlight look.
Wayne, I still have my 996. It failed to start about a week ago, for the first time. I have owned a 996 continuously since 2003 and I have never had one strand me. It remains the most dependable car that I have ever owned. I have a new reference sensor waiting for me to install.
The Maserati cured me of my project car habit. My youngest son has a supercharged fox body Saleen sitting in my driveway, waiting for us to replace a cracked block. I will help him build his engine, but I don't plan on doing any more projects of my own. I would rather fish and go shooting, than work on cars in my old age.
Did you ever get a cabin? Are you nearing retirement age? I considered upgrading my headlights also until I realized that I never drive my 996 at night. There are too many large furry creatures that come out at night here.
glad to hear that you and the car are doing well. I feel the same way about reliability. Remarkable car.
Sorry to hear youve stopped rehabbing cars. I always enjoyed watching your projects.
we didnt get the cabin yet. We moved states again, so i need one more move to take me back to the south for retirement... i have a few more years left, but not too many. 😁 I do envy you on how youre spending your time now.
So, I've got all the bulb replaced, all but one are functional and I'm scratching my head.
The small parking light on one unit is not functional. It's not the bulb. Any ideas why one side would illuminate and not the other?
I was having a similar issue. But mine affected the turn signal and city/park lamp. Main bulb/high beam/fog worked fine
WIth the light installed and on, if you wiggle the light does that bulb come on?
My problem was the car side connector. I had to adjust it slightly to get it to work. I think I moved it slightly when I put the lights in the first time.
I swap between Litronics and the original ambers from time to time; always plug-play. Amazing how much heavier the Litronics are with that ballast. Huge difference in lighting though.
Thanks! That's useful and I would never have guessed. That's the same light I'm having problems with.
I'll try that next. How did you fix the connection?
After I made sure all the tracks where the headlight rides into the bucket were free of gunk and such it was kinda just trial and error.
I reached my hand to behind where the main electrical connector is in the bucket and it has ever so slight amount of play and I'd move it then put the headlight back until it was a solid connection.
You are absolutely awesome! I was starting to think I had wasted $1000 on the headlights. I gave it a push and the bulb came on. You made my day! Thank you!
