Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspected cause
yup probably the easiest way to get it up and running
Leading evidence: 'easiest way' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'easiest way' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run 996tt/gt2 dme' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
electronics integration would be the toughest part, cannot run 996tt/gt2 DME on a 7GT2 engine platform due to MAF/variocam/vtg, etc

Suggestion
Determine the engine you want (GT3), research exactly what systems are required to make the engine run, buy a donor car complete with the required electrical systems as well as the gearbox and motor.

If you have the time and resources that would be an awesome project to undertake that would set your car apart.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've got a really high miles 996. I recently saw a 2009 997.2 (a GT2, I think) with 35k miles that was wrecked in the front and was being parted out. Which got me thinking ... How difficult would it be to mate the 997.2 engine to my 996? Mostly curious at this point.
Thanks to all of you who weigh in on the forum.
Anything is possible, but a plain 997.2 swap is complicated enough due to the different DME (engine computer) and wiring harness. If this is truly a GT2 - that would make it a twin turbo which has many packaging differences on top of the DME and wiring harness needs.
Instead of trying to adapt a 9A1 engine platform in an M9X based car, make plans to rebuild the engine you have before it experiences a serious failure.
I'd say you probably could but not without some custom fabrication, be it for motor mounts or wiring. If you have the time and resources that would be an awesome project to undertake that would set your car apart. If it's a GT2 I'd skip though and keep in NA with a GT3 motor or even the regular one!
I've been considering a full engine rebuild, but am finding that that may cost nearly as much as the car will be worth after the rebuild. I was just looking for other options to consider.
If you do some searching, there was a member that did a good amount of research comparing various rebuild options for our engines. He did an awesome job comparing everything from cost, to timelines and what actually goes into the rebuild and even ratings. A lot of that may depend on your long term goals for the car. Unlike Miata, FSI is not always the answer
I have spent a fair amount of time contemplating engine swaps (Porsche engines only). Determine the engine you want (GT3), research exactly what systems are required to make the engine run, buy a donor car complete with the required electrical systems as well as the gearbox and motor. This is the part of the task that is most intimidating for me.
Be prepared for some fab work, but should not be too bad.
When you're done, if you've removed a engine / gearbox that works from the car receiving the swap - sell em, and sell everything you can out of the donor car.
Do not sell ANYTHING from the donor until the car receiving the swap is up and running !
I have been trying to do the math on what a ballpark cost for this would be compared to rebuilding an M96... I think, depending on the donor car and what is kept vs. parted out... its got some potential.
ETA... I would stay away from a turbo just because the plumbing of the IC system is problematic... Now, you could take the Mezgar out of a turbo and rebuild it to be an NA monster... but that's a different topic altogether and I would NOT do that to a GT2 motor.
electronics integration would be the toughest part, cannot run 996tt/gt2 DME on a 7GT2 engine platform due to MAF/variocam/vtg, etc
swap on 996tt/Gt2 heads and dme and package becomes more feasible
Full standalone requires custom harness, maybe sensors as well. I think path of least resistance would be a full harness swap with the required control modules from a donor car.
Also, need someone to tune it...which would end up making or breaking the setup.
Full stand-alone will not pass emissions if required in your state (it is in mine).
Rather than doing anything drastic, why not spend some money addressing any needed maintenance items on the car you have? If the car runs well, there no need for any drastic action like a rebuild or replacement.
Just drive the car. It will figure out have to separate you from some of your money as it ages; no need to force the issue.
Well....came across this today:
Surely, if you can make 991 work then I can't see why not 997.2. Curious to see how this turns out. It's clearly in good hands of people that know what they are doing.
