Anyway the great thing about this win is first, it was the cheapest 996 on eBay at the time, second I beat out another bidder with a buzzer beater bid and finally, the other bidder was also from Houston so I need to find out who that is and cast some shade.

The fabric on mine has to be replaced but I cant get the front lock to release, even manually yet.

Convertible top isn't going down so it's probably a hydraulic leak.
Check camshaft deviations, aos, fuel trims, and over-rev

Suggestion
I can't drop the sump & do bore scoping at the moment(recovering from surgery) but I can check camshaft deviations, AOS, fuel trims, and over-rev with my Durametric.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've been lurking here for a while because I had no skin in the game when it came to owning one of these. Well that's changed! A couple of days ago I was shopping online for a project car and found this 2002 Carrera in Florida. It was apparently driven by a lady for a while and has 101K miles living in a snow-less climate. The car is technically a two-owner but the second owner is the first owner's son so it stayed in the family. Anyway the great thing about this win is first, it was the cheapest 996 on eBay at the time, second I beat out another bidder with a buzzer beater bid and finally, the other bidder was also from Houston so I need to find out who that is and cast some shade.
Luckily my wife captured the whole experience on video so I decided to share it here. I've owned Audis and Mercedes but never a Porsche. That changed in an instant. Still get chills.
Check it out here.
Have a great weekend.

Nice! This car is in need of love and I plan on nursing it back. No idea what needs to be done but I suspect IMS and re-hose the HVAC since it's not blowing cold. Living in Texas I'll be doing the A/C first. Convertible top isn't going down so it's probably a hydraulic leak. Again, no biggie. Front bumper was whacked into something and an accident was claimed. We'll see. Should have it in a week or so. There's a walk-around video too.
Nice, I can see some potential.
Hopefully everything checks out fine once you get it.
If you want, I can help you check(most of) the mechanicals once you get it here.

Deal! I'll hit you up once it gets here. I'm sure i'll post about it too. lol I've got a scope. I'm sure I'll be able to drop the sump too. I've got a 2007 A4 in my garage spot at the moment that I'm working on. I'll need to put the engine back in before I can move it. Waiting on parts as usual.
I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on this car. I would definitely encourage you to start with sorting out anything that needs to be done on the engine first before moving to the cosmetics. Therefore, I'd take TexSquirrel's offer to help with diagnosing any problems using his Durametric. Hope you'll consider either documenting here on Rennlist or in a video series on YouTube. Cheers!
Awesome! Congratulations! I love to see these cars get brought back from the edge. They are SO. MUCH. FUN!
Can't wait to see the story unfold. Have fun!
Good for you “welcome to the party pal” I love mine and they give back as much as you give them, Try to do as much repair and maintenance yourself there is a lot of knowledge on this forum and a bunch of DIY YouTubes.

Come on down, and over to the right!
It's only a 17 hour drive...and you get to do it in a 996!
I ran diagnostics on another Rennlister's 996 this morning.
Really nice looking early (pre-April factory fire)1998 build.
Everything looked good on the Durametric & manometer.
Unfortunately the engine has a tick that sounds like piston slap.
That's unfortunate.
Thanks, be sure stay tuned Its going to be featured as my new project for season 2 on my channel.
Im thinking of doing a pre/post dyno compare video where I test the performance as/is with 101k miles and then after a complete refresh. Id be curious to see what was lost and then what was gained back.
yogi Im here in Katy, 2 month ownership of 3/98 Carrera coupe. 996.1 6 speed. Squirrel is an awesome guy. On Saturday we met at the cars and coffee at whiskey cake basically 99 and I 10. He ran the durametric and nanometer on my car. Everything check out great. Sounds like your car needs some work. Ill suggest you join PCA the lone star region is real busy and active I have met a lot of great people.
The car with a slight tick is mine. Im fine with it, I have driven it 3,000 miles so far. There no smoke or oil consumption at all. Anyway I have $18,000 in it. I was looking at the car you got but it seemed that if was going to be expensive to fix some of those issues. Anyway I drove this car pictured attached and it seemed good probably could have bought it for $16,500 or less. My Car has 25,000 mile clutch, 5,000 miles ago all fluids where flushed new plugs, new coils. Ac has new hoses and blows ice cold. First oil change no debris filter pleats looked great. Yes car has been modified. I guess as the bore scoring progresses Ill see what I do.

My car.
That's a 20 minute drive for me. Definitely interested. I'll be joining PCA for sure.
Just got word the car is being picked up at this moment. It'll be in my driveway by the end of the week!
Yogi hopefully I didnt confuse you. Check their website and go for the calendar GTG coffee on Saturday it rotates every week. Yes the Katy one is once a month, there is also another one in Sugarland thats squirrel backyards. Welcome to the club. Celebrating my birthday we are in Austin heading to San Marcos hitting a few BBQ joints and brew houses today. Yesterday we ate lunch in the oldest (first) Texas BBQ joint.
I recently bought a 99 C2 cab also (less than 18k miles), I thought the same as you since my top would not go down either, No biggie right?
was completely wrong, car has been at House Automotive (Pasadena,CA) going on 4 weeks! (they have had it longer than I have,
waiting on another part as Porsche has updated the cab motor with a new bracket mount, ours is welded in, I'm really really starting to regret
this purchase as my tab is about to hit $7k and this is just to make the top work, these cabs are not cheap to repair, and this is on a low mile car.
Dominic
99 C2 cab.
My 2002s hydraulic pump is not welded. There are four bolts. Its definitely leaking. I think the crush washers are toast. The fabric on mine has to be replaced but I cant get the front lock to release, even manually yet. Im going to top off the pump and see if that gets things moving. I just want it down for now. Ill worry about fixing it later.
That is why you want to get a coupe. Two people I know spent between $3,500 to $5,000 to get those things right. The only way to go for a cab is if you get the hard top that comes with them. A lot of people ordered them with hard top delete to save $1,500 but
Go to the one on round rock.
Got a new Belgium voodo ranger mug with the purchase, nobody is taking my bud light, going to sleep like a baby tonight.
that is bad. Anyways Pizza and IPAs at Tony CS in Austin if you ever come over here you got to try that. I was an assistant manager pizza maker in college for Dominoes. Tonys great Pizza lots of draft beer. Cheers.
Not buying the hard top was a big oversight. Id definitely like a hard top right about now.
Hydraulic pump was full even though there was fluid around the unit. What was weird is the hose clamp around the reservoir.
Congratulations. I was looking on eBay for the past couple months and saw this car a few times. I hope it works out for you!
Ive owned a 2001 996 and blew the engine and then have had 3 986 Boxsters.
Grabbed a nice 996 cab locally 2 weeks back with a stack of maintenance records on Craigslist !
Since Im retired I live a different life. Today bending the elbow yo show physical effort. Its 5 pm somewhere in the world, golden tee and drafts with friends,
Daily excercise elbow bending is good for you.
Dont say I dont play any sports. E sports golden tee,
**** off, s wing place that runs out of wings. Im having this guy manage my death, it may never arrive.
Dont you find it fascinating that when you go somewhere they have all different kinds of craft beer not normally available in your area. Also food is the same.
These two from Pinthouse brewery in Austin. If you guys go there there are more than 25 craft breweries which is surprising by the size of the area.
if you have time we should get together and go to new label brewing here in Katy Texas. I just tried their new sitting side haze Ipa at the car show and it was awesome. Affordable too, $6 for a pint at the oaks restaurant in cane island wasnt bad.
Not to crazy about corvettes but i love the blues.
1,200 HP twin turbo lambo flames from the exhaust.
For whoever says Im not religious, St Arnold is the patron of brewers, he is always available cold in my refrigerator, plus they are Texas oldest craft brewery
Thats the sittin haze from New label, I had three.
The same way I love the flat six, I love the straight sixes from BMW, I had a shark 1985 M635CSI, 300 hp at the wheels. This is the predecessor to that car, 3.0 eurospec CSI.
I always like the lotus, they are just not that common.
