Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A couple years ago, I replaced my 3.4L airbox (C2 1999 mecha) by a 3.8L one. I kept the original snorkle and 3.4 L MAF sensor. This configuration worked fine as the car passed 2 smog test in CA. ( the visual inspection was a joke)... Now, it is time to replace my old MAF. I read on the Bosh website that the MAF sensor function is sensible to the box design. What do you think? Should the MAF sensor been upgraded according to the box design to optimize its function?

POST 2Original post

Nope the MAF is calibrated to the ECU and any change would require a custom ECU program to deal with it. Not to mention the airbox design from the 3.4 to the 3.8 is not that drastic of a change. That's why you have not had any CELs or running problems after the swap.

Also, I assume the OP's '99 has a cable throttle which uses a different MAF plug than the electronic throttle cars. Cable on the left, e gas on the right.

POST 4Original post

I have had a 3.8 air box in my car with the 3.4 maf for 10+ years with no problem. On the 3.8 box there is another vacuum actuated flap that I have never hooked up though.

POST 5Original post

Ive had my 2003 C2 3.6 for about 8 months and have seen some owners who have replaced their air boxes with the newer 3.8 models. Is there a performance or sound upgrade difference? If so, is there anything that needs to be done to facilitate the change and where wold I be able to find a new one? Joe
