Yes, I had (6) new injectors installed PN: 996-606-122-00.

Replace oldest primary o2 sensor and see where they are

I'm going to replace the oldest primary O2 sensor and see where they are again.

Im changing over to intermediate oil this weekend (DRIVEN HR) and have a new precast O2 sensor on order to replace the one with possibly 114k on it.

It may be paranoia, but Im guessing that Im running a bit rich and thats why my bumper is a bit sooty.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All -
So I think my car is running rich. With a newly rebuilt 3.8L and only about 800 miles on it, Im being extra cautious. It may be paranoia, but Im guessing that Im running a bit rich and thats why my bumper is a bit sooty.
To answer ahead of time; the following are new: injectors, MAF, plugs, UAOS. Cool pa kid have about 3K on them. One O2 has 20K, the other Im guessing might be original, so 114k. Also worth noting, the car has a Fabspeed CAI with new OEM paper filter.
I took the car out and ran it for about 20 mins. I came home and hooked up the iCarsoft PorII reader and heres a video of the readout at idle and then a photo after I turned the car off:
You Tube
Additionally, here are some other read outs:MAF air flow rate:
Idle: 4.25 g/s
2000 rpm: 10 g/s
3000 rpm: 14.25 g/s
O2 sensor output:
B1-S1: 0.725V
B1-S2: 0.270V
B2-S1: 0.645V
B2-S2: 0.230V
Im changing over to intermediate oil this weekend (DRIVEN HR) and have a new precast O2 sensor on order to replace the one with possibly 114k on it.
Any thoughts on my situation are appreciated.
What fuel are you running? What injectors are you running?
I am assuming you have 3.6 injectors in a 3.4(3.8) engine, and are running E10 (10% Ethanol laced fuel) .
You are not running rich.
3.6 injectors flow 10% more than 3.4 DME is calibrated for, ....E10 "NEEDS" 6% more fuel/injector time than non-E10 to be perfect Lamda 1 (stoichiometric) ..
What you are seeing is the DME is taking away 0-3% "injector time" to make the air/fuel ratio "perfect" (stoich) and is well within the "auto-tuning window" of the DME..
If the "auto-tuning " tries to go "out of the window", the DME will set a code and tell you if you are rich..
Hi -
Yes, I had (6) new injectors installed PN: 996-606-122-00.
I was under the impression that I am running rich after reading numerous articles and seeing hte following from a post from Jake "
Any engine that runs rich WILL consume oil, and it can be in heavy amounts."
So if I'm running lean (within correctable range) where else do I need to look to figure out why I'm burning a high amount of oil in my newly rebuilt engine with only 1,000 miles on it? My bumper is sooty and my oil is really dark. Could it be that my rings aren't seated yet? (Nikkies w/ JE pistons and rings).
Yes of course it can. New engines take a while to break -in. How much oil have you used??? According to Porsche, some engines can take as long as 30k miles to fully seat the rings. This is of course on factory cylinders and rings and typically doesn't take near that long. JE rings and Nikasil cylinders would be similar .
OK - thank you. I'm going to replace the oldest primary O2 sensor and see where they are again. I also might have found a tiny leak in the CAI. It will be interesting to see if they change.
It just seems odd that if a new car doesn't have thousands of miles on the engine, how do those rings seat so quickly and not cause sooty bumpers?
It's not unusual for rebuilt engines(non-Porsche specific) to take 800 to 2500 miles for the rings to seat.
1 quart in 1000 miles would not be unusual at all.
Think I burned/added about a half quart of HR5 in the 750 miles before putting her away for winter. Keeping an eye on fuel trims as well. Foxwell reads out a little different, but last I looked I was 1.00 on Bank 1 and 0.97 on Bank 2 for FRA. I'll try to remember to take a pic in the morning.
