Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi! So I have this problem with my C4S I recently bought, that it will not start when the engine gets warm/hot. This happened couple of times when I drove a little bit longer, the engine gets warm and I shut down the car. When I try to start the car after a minute or two, turn the key and nothing happens. It wont crank. I wait maybe 5-10 minutes and let the car cool down and it starts again like nothing ever happened. What do you think might be the problem here?

POST 2Original post

Starter. Gets heat soaked and does not work. Buy a new Bosch starter off Amazon and replace it.

I say it's a malfunctioning crank position sensor.

POST 6Original post

I had similar symptoms with a bad Crank position sensor.

You sure? I don't know if it is true for Porsche, but for most cars a bad crank sensor will let it crank forever but not fire. No crank on a Porsche with a bad sensor?

Not absolute, but pretty sure. I've read this kind of thing countless times. People will say "it didn't crank", but what they're really mean it didn't start or "fire up" even though the crank was moving. As these cars are now over the 20-year mark, the crank position sensor failures are becoming a common problem. Of course, if the crank is not moving, then the starter is suspect.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the answers. I am sure the car does not crank. So I think I should first suspect the starter?

POST 10Original post

First start with some simple checks (1) voltage across battery terminals (2) a solid 12+V at the jumper point in the engine bay (3) solid ground from the engine to the frame (4) does anything change if you wiggle the ignition key? (5) if no cranking occurs at all then it is the starter. It has been years, but when mine did this it simply failed to crank if the engine was warmed up. If I waited 15 minutes it would start right up. I bought a new starter on Amazon. It solved the problem and been good to go for many years.

If you know that the car is not "cranking", then without a doubt plan to replace the starter as noted in this thread. While you're in there, it's smart to install a fresh crankshaft sensor. Correct "wording" is very important here. It has always been a pet peeve of mine when trying to help someone but there choice of words doesn't help, it actually misleads the diagnostic tree/routine . Won't "crank" means : the engine physically won't spin, as in turning over by hand, like the old " t-Model Fords" with a "hand crank". Won't "start" means::: that the engine is "cranking" or turning over /spinning fine and fast , but fails to "ignite". "Slow to crank" means ::: that the engine spins slowly, has difficulty in spinning, will not spin fast enough to "ignite" "Slow to start" means :: that the engine spins fast and normal, but has to spin for a long period of time before it "ignites".. If the problem is "intermittent" the correct wording becomes even more important. Some failed parts will only fit one of the 4 scenario wordings listed, some will fit more but to be able to verbally trouble shoot an issue that can be caused by many parts the exact symptom must be understood.

I understand, but even though English is not my first language, I still think the car is not in fact cranking. As in when I turn the key, nothing happens, I dont hear or feel anything. Also something I noticed (and failed to mention) is that I have an automatic gearbox and the car wont start or even crank on P, but it started once when I put the shift on N. Could there also be a problem with the transmission somewhere not allowing the car to start when hot?

Haha I understand! Im not trying to be rude Maybe I still need to practise my forum etiquette. And thanks to Joe! I have seen and read your posts. I appreciate all the help! Edit: And now I made two separate replies instead of just one...

Your English is not too bad, in fact it is more precise than a lot of people who has English as a first language (perhaps because you have to try harder?) But you bring up a good point, if you can make the car crank and start by moving the gear lever to "N", there is a "neutral safety switch on the Tiptronic that could be at fault or the gear linkage may be maladjusted.
