I look up on the drivers side at the differential and I think I can see the 8mm fill plug, but below that I see the air cooling-like fins like on a motorcycle head where the drain plug should be poking down as per DSLamitz video, but there is no plug there.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is weird! I have car up on jack stands trying to change diff oil. I am a 75 year old novice mechanic, but I did not know i was this bad! I cannot find 14mm drain plug for differential on my 1999 Carrera 2 with Tiptronic. The engine was replaced by previous owner so at this point I don't know for sure what year the engine and trans are. To fit and use a cable throttle I assume it has to be 98 or 99. I am following the Youtube video of DSLamitz and the ecarguides directions. I look up on the drivers side at the differential and I think I can see the 8mm fill plug, but below that I see the air cooling-like fins like on a motorcycle head where the drain plug should be poking down as per DSLamitz video, but there is no plug there. Is it possible I have a 98 engine and they did not have a drain plug? I am confused. Thanks to any one who can tell me what I am missing. (Trying to spend $40 for gear oil rather than $400 at the mechanics.)

POST 3Original post

My experience is with Audi, but I've found that some ZF transmissions do not have a drain plug for the diff, so don't be surprised if there is no drain. I've sucked as much fluid as possible out the fill hole and refilled. The diff tends to be easy on oil, and I doubt that many people both changing it.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry if I was not clear. The oil I want to change is the differential oil, not the transmission oil. I believe the differential compartment is in the transmission housing but the diff is separate and has its own fill plug and sometimes its own drain plug. My unknown year does not seem to have the differential drain plug. My chassis is a 99. Engine was changed by last owner--vintage unknown. The 99 in the youtube video by dslamitz has a diff drain plug. Does anyone out there know in the 996 series which years or partial years did not have a drain plug in the differential. I did suck maybe 5 oz. out with a tube from the refill hole and refill that with new, but I don't believe I really did a thorough job.

Sorry I didn't take any pics, but I recently did this on my 03 C2 w/tip. You have to take off the passenger side rear wheel and then you can see the fill plug, the drain plug is at the bottom.
