Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
If you are running good tires that get superior grip on the terrain you are driving on, you greatly reduce your risk.
Leading evidence: 'Run good tires' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run good tires' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It would be much cheaper and easier to just sell and buy one with it.
I understand why you might want it.
I'm just glad that there's a way to turn it off...Best of both worlds.
Because I'd rather a mistake result in being slapped by PSM than being slapped by a tree or another car.
No one's perfect, right? And if you're driving responsibly on a public road, you shouldn't ever notice it. Better safe than sorry.
It's probably not a popular opinion, I know.
Oh, I haven't bought anything yet. I've just got my eye on a few early 996s and I'm still deciding if lack of PSM is a deal breaker for me. Honestly, I think it might be.
I didn't give it much thought when I was looking for one of these. I still really don't know what the capability of the PSM is. I have it and I haven't given it much thought other that it adds some complexity to brake system flushing. I get it though, if you want it, it is what it is. When I started to shop for Porsches last year, my oldest daughter threw me under the bus when we all took a test drive of a 944 and she said there's no shoulder belts in the back seats. The 996 I bought settled all the safety compromises. Airbags, etc. My daughters will drive this eventually and the extra features aren't a bad thing.
Appreciate your reply.
A 996 Carerra isn't that powerful that it will "get away" from you like a 996 GT2 can. To your point, go with a 996 with PSM if it's your preference. Or, get a C4 or C4S which gives you the stability of AWD. If I am not driving my 996, I am driving my Audi's. Love the Quattro. Have had 8 Audi's since 1993, and am never without one.
However, if you found a 996 Carerra that you really like, but it doesn't have PSM, there is another option that will add stability to your car and in my humble opinion, is better than having PSM, which is to add an LSD to the car. If it already has one, that's even better, but it most likely doesn't.
I know this because I have an 02 Carerra (bought in 02) without PSM and it did not have a LSD either. Never noticed, never asked, never needed either until my 3rd year of tracking the car. I added a rebuilt Guard LSD to my car, and it was night and day around town, on the highway, on the trac k and in snow and wet weather. The stability and control an LSD provides in my humble opinion is light years better than Psm.
But, you gotta do what's best for you. Lots of options available. Good luck!
A close friend of mine is a big Volvo fan for the safety aspect. He hit a moose and it may have saved his life. Everyone has their needs for these cars, some aesthetics, some functional. Get what you want, seems to be plenty of choices out there.
Robert,
One more thing to chew on as you contemplate which 996 is the one.
The two most important safety items on the car are tires and brakes, and too many people skimp on both.
If you are running good tires that get superior grip on the terrain you are driving on, you greatly reduce your risk. The reason is that you will have more effective traction when you need it most. Too many times I see the wrong tires on performance cars that will sub-optimize adhesion.
The same can be said for brakes. Assuming you have good tires, you want to make sure your brakes have been rebuilt, fully functioning and you are not skimping on rotors and pads.
Bad tires + bad brakes = A FN mess regardless if you have PSM or an LSD
More than a few choices for brakes and tires too. All season, summer only, race only, what are you going to use the car primarily for? Brake pads, rotors, and calipers are varied too.
