I would still check alignment, only because if we assume its correct, we could end up chasing non-issues and repair bills can get pricey.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, Like alcohol to some or drugs to others, I just can't stay away from Porsches for long I suppose. I just picked up a high mileage (155K mi) 996.2 Cabriolet for a steal. Trying to sort out the car and one of the key issues is the sloppy steering and here are the symptoms: - At highway speeds, there's a very slight shimmy in the wheel. - Lots of bump steer - There's more play in the wheel than a 70's Cadillac. I feel like I can turn the wheel 5-8 degrees before the front tires react. - Over uneven pavement, the steering wheel "thunks" and vibrates briefly. - There's NO audible clunking noise when I turn the wheel, or when I go over bumps. - Tires/wheels were recently balanced. - Previous owner claims an alignment was done recently My guesses are in order of priority: - Tie Rod ends (but quick visual inspection doesn't show dry or rotted) - Struts (but that doesn't explain the play in the wheel) - Steering rack bushings (but wouldn't there typically be a clunk?) Any advice or feedback appreciated. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

Have you checked the wheel bearings? Could be the cause for the slight vibration in the wheel, especially if they have 155k miles on them. Not sure on the wide range on the steering wheel before it engages though.

POST 3Original post

At 155k everything rubber is suspect from a sway bar to toe arm to a coffin arm. Its really not that expensive to just get the kit from fcpeuro and replace it all. It may also sound weird but motor andntrans mounts can effect the steering too.

POST 4Original post

I would still check alignment, only because if we assume its correct, we could end up chasing non-issues and repair bills can get pricey. Many good shops can handle all things mentioned here in this thread.
