When I cleaned my rads there were a lot of leaves in there, which Hurdi's grills will not allow in.

I also used the gutter guard material and installed the grills from the back.

Incidentally, I just changed my cooling fluids to PRESTONE 50/50 extended life in the last week.

Suggestion
I think you would have been better off just giving the condenser/radiator areas a thorough bumper cover off cleaning then periodically using something to blow the stuff out before it packs in/around the condenser/radiator area.

Suggestion
I'm way too far removed from my aerodynamics courses to actually calculate anything, but it will change your smooth airflow (laminar) to turbulent prior to hitting the radiators, restrict the flow due to lower intake area (reduced by area of the mesh material), and reduce the velocity of the airflow through the radiators.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I finished the job on my 1999 996. Remove the bumper as here. -

Then take the bumper onto a carpeted floor. Buy a
leaf gutter guard from a hardware store for under $5. Throw away the
two clips on the guard. Cut it in half with tin snips each 18 inches long. The gutter
guard is 3 foot long. The mesh is very pliable and can be bent into shape by hand. I used three screws
on each side bending the mesh around the slots leaving room for the air scoops to sit in place for
when the bumper goes back on the car. Choose the thickest parts of the black plastic surround to screw
the mesh to carefully bending back the edge to allow the rubber air scoop to seat properly when the bumper
is re installed to the car.
Here are the tools you will need.
here is the inside of the bumper in the living room on the carpet so not to mark the paintwork.
Here is the front before putting it back on the car.
And here is the finished job. I can always spray paint them black if they tarnish but like the silver color.
Check this site out at $275 a pop which cost me under $5.. DIY 2 hours tops start to finish. I hate like hell exposing a rip off but I have proved that some sites think we are idiots.

This requires some clarification.
Are screws just threaded in the bumper from the rear? How did you not puncture the bumper? Let us know how this holds at higher speeds.
half inch long self tappers with washers. Drill a small hole to accept the screw. Drill into the black stuff at its thickest so you don't go to the outside. You can see the drill size in the first picture. I had the car up to 75 and alls well. I did it to keep leaves and crap going in the scoops to the condenser and radiator. I saw pebbles marks on the condenser fins.
Not painting it just yet. I like the silver color to match the Artic Silver car but will paint them flat black if they start to tarnish. I think they would still kill the grass hoppers and sparrow but their remains along with leaves and cig ends wont go between the condenser and the Rads. This will save me having to remove the front again to clean them. The outside air temp sensor I cut away the holder to allow the mesh to seat properly and left it hanging inside the right hand air scoop.
I see the exact gutter guard at Home Depo 'Hinged 6' wide 36'long at $2-29cents. You need just one to complete both sides of a 1999 996. Throw away the hinges.

I thought of that as one of the links suggested cutting away the middle piece. Problem with that for me is there is only the bulk head of the car behind that slot and no air scoop. Plus I could not guarantee I could make a perfect job of the cut out with my jig saw. The bulk head is light in color (although I could paint it black) and I was afraid it may show through and could see no point in molesting the bumper when that part serves no purpose at all. If at some time in the future I should paint the mesh flat black, I think it would not be so obvious that there is the plastic black part in the center of the bumper. However if I should ever install a third rad then I would certainly cut out the middle part and put mesh on the inside. Then it would indeed be serving a purpose for being there. But thanks for the suggestion.
Well, I have to raise a dissenting voice and point out the mesh will still let the little stuff through only without the bigger fluffy stuff it will more readily pack and hold moisture and corrode the A/C condenser/radiator unless you remove it.
Being more compact/denser this will still require you remove the bumper cover.

Macster I can take the front bumper off now with my eyes closed and intend to check it again in a couple of years time as usual. I have cleaned between the rads and condensers twice since I got the car 2 and a half years ago and still intend to clean them even though the mesh is in place. I put the mesh in place after I saw the fins on the condensers badly scored and flattened in places. Mainly to stop larger pieces ie:- birds and larger stones from damaging the condensers. At least I think the mesh will deflect smaller pebbles from doing more damage. Hey Macster, thanks for your concern and advice which has been well noted.

The mesh is also reducing the air volume flowing through the radiators.
that thought did cross my mind so I have been checking my temps as I warm the car up. The temps are holding at just over 180f and I have been driving it hard for that particular reason since doing the job. Incidentally, I just changed my cooling fluids to PRESTONE 50/50 extended life in the last week.
I doubt the grill changes air flow volume at all. When I cleaned my rads there were a lot of leaves in there, which Hurdi's grills will not allow in. I'd have clear coated the grills with some clear top coat spray, the aluminum will oxidize over time, or paint them flat black, will look great with silver car. JMHO

I would have the grills powder coated first. Just ask your local powder coater to throw them in the booth next time they do flat black or whatever color you like and most would probably charge you very little to do so.
It's insignificant in street applications but in pro motorsports where you need that extra 1%, it can play a factor. If you wanna mimic PM Cup car grills, get the flat ones. I'll try to dig up a pic later when I get on my desktop.
I just did a similar mod with my 997 but didn't have the guts to remove the front bumper. I also used the gutter guard material and installed the grills from the back. the main difference is that I used zip ties in the corners to secure the grills. On a black grill the ties are not noticeable at all (yes, really) and look like they actually belong there. you'd have to get on your knees to be able to even notice them. I also painted the screen with black PlastiDip rubberized coating. The plastidip spray remains flexible and will not flake or peel like regular spray paint. The finish is flat black and the rubberized coating makes the grill feel much less tinny. The main objective was to minimize any direct hits to the condenser/radiator from road debirs or stones. I left the center open so that I retain access to go in and periodically clean/vacuum the area in front of the condensors. I also made a youtube video detailing the process.
This link should work for a few days. I didn't have a youtube account and used my daughters account to post the video and she is pissed.... so I will have to open my own account and repost later on. For now use this
DIY Grill Mesh for Porsche 911 997.2 ( total cost = $9.00 ) - YouTube
It looks good, but it will disrupt and reduce the amount of airflow over your radiators. Porsche is concerned enough about it to put nice flow directors that smoothly turns the air into the radiators and they go so far as to add a 3rd radiator for track use, they obviously put some thought into cooling on these cars. Like I said, you may not notice any difference on the street, but it's definitely something to monitor.
Hmmm... I would think that a big leaf on the radiator, or rock chips on the fins might be more harmful than a screen in front of the rad. I'm sure the radiator is also sufficiently over designed, that unless you are racing in 100 degree+ weather, you would never notice the difference.... besides, if there's a problem, with the car overheating, cut the zip ties, and you're only out a few bucks and 30 min of work. I plan on doing this mod.
