Dash is showing two bars from full, and can drop to 4 bars from full sometimes even when checked cold.

Oil level is checked on level ground when cold, as I've done with every car I've owned, I was always to to check when cold when the oil has drained back to the sump.

I use the dot for the upper level...I assume that is why they put it there.

The mistake is checking your oil in the morning when the engine is cold...and anything it is not really really really level.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
I've noticed that the dash oil level seems to fluctuate a fair amount but the dipstick level is consistent.
Dash is showing two bars from full, and can drop to 4 bars from full sometimes even when checked cold.
This is the dipstick level on a cold engine. It's up to the dot on the high level.
I don't have an owners manual to refer to so how does it look?
The car hasn't used any oil since I bought it in January and oil pressure is good at 1.6 bar at idle when hot.
Thanks
Most of the forum will tell you to trust the dipstick. .....with no fact-based reason why. The electronic gauge factors time and temp. New cars don't even have a dipstick. Those who disagree need to go to the newer forums and start a "how to add a dipstick thread".
Your dipstick indicates an overfill. The oil level "max" is where the upper notch is. The lower notch is the "min". The oil should not be higher than the upper notch. All the info here is also in your owners manual.
As long as your car is fully warmed up before you stop it and the parking spot is level, I would trust the dipstick reading in the morning.
I agree that the OP oil level is to high. It should not be up to the dot. The upper notch is the correct level. On mine it doesn't take much to overfill it from the upper notch to the dot.
I use the dot for the upper level...I assume that is why they put it there. The notches are self evident and if the dot were not to be used the notches would make sense. The mistake is checking your oil in the morning when the engine is cold...and anything it is not really really really level. I use the electronic guage and use the dipstick to confirm if there is a change.
Thanks for the replies.
As I mentioned I don't have an owners manual to refer to.
I'm not getting any smoke to indicate an overfill.

You can download the owners manual from Renntech.org if you join it. Tons of useful info and documents there.
Base on what you described, we're using the same way to measure oil level. Your engine is a little bit overfilled for sure per the owners manual. The issue with overfill is it may lead to too much aeration in the oil that could lessen its lubricating property. It also adds stress to the RMS. Of course you will see white smoke if your are significantly overfilled.
John, the dot is not the upper level. Look in your owners manual. If your level is at the dot it is slightly overfilled. Overfilling is not good. CHECKING IN THE MORNING OR ABOUT HALF HOUR AFTER DRIVING SHOULD SHOW THE LEVEL AT THE TOP OF THE NOTCH, NOT THE DOT ACCORDING TO OWNERS MANUAL. I think the dot was part of the manufacturing process of the dipstick and holds the plastic to the flat metal.
