Pretty much my thinking except I use the Lucas upper cylinder lubricant.

Suggestion
I did a thread a few months back about the two-stroke effect and have since added 6oz* per ~10 gallons just to give the rings a little extra lubricity that may have been lost in the last couple of decades of changing fuel formulations (less sulphur and more ethanol, for example).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ive talked to many people about Sea Foam and Lucas additives that are crazy about them. I just bought my 2000 996 Carrera and wasnt sure if you guys had advice about using them? Good or not...
I've used Sea Foam in my gas a few times. I tried the Driven product once too. No negatives at all. My thinking was that it would help clean and remove any water from the fueling system. Not sure how much actual benefit there is, but Sea Foam claims to add lubricity to the fuel. This seemed important to me as gas these days has more ethanol which would remove any lubricity left by the oil on the cylinder walls. If I can add some lubricity back to the gas I'd see that as a benefit as one of the many things you can do to keep those bores happy and in good shape. I have no data behind this but seemed to make sense to me and didn't hurt anything.

Lucas, when bought by the gallon, only costs ~$1 per fill up. I doubt the expensive Techron or Driven products do much more. They all seem to have the weight of a light oil and I think that is how they are a benefit, plus they are formulated to be burned up during 4-stroke combustion so cats and sensors should be fine.

Cool and good to know! I may check this product out. I'm not an expert in this but my only question would be: when adding either product to the gas at a fill up, do any of the benefits around lubricity go away once you burn through the tank or does the lubricity, at least to a small percentage start to build up on anywhere it touches, like cylinder bores. My guess is no but again, with so many small factors I feel like anything helps.
Yeah, my decision isn't based upon trial and error, nor any Google research. The motorhead mastermind who's currently building my new engine has had success with this liquid trio.
Project Farm has a bunch of videos testing oil and additives, might be worth checking out. Obviously its youtube and you should take it with a grain of salt but he does some interesting testing.
Just 2 cents.. Pretty much all the marques recommend some kind of injection cleaner,,, Seafoam is a long standing marine product.. At least when I was on boats you would see a can of it pretty much on every boat. I run 1 can just before each oil change.. I have used it in several cars and your exhaust temps go up slightly around 150 degrees (I had a couple rigs with OBD readers on the dash.. ) If your filling with name brand gas the Seafoam's main assist is it helps keep the top ring and piston top clean of carbon. (At least that's what I noticed on the car I used it long term in.) A bore scope is a easy way to see whats happening..
Hey pdxmotorhead long time no see. Did you get all settled in to your new residence? I remember your 996 had Hydrolocked just before you were planning to move, how are you coming on the build?
Oh and back on the subject, Castor Bean Oil (Maxima 927) and Sea Foam are the only additives I even think about using.
Chevron Techron used to be the only additive (fuel) that was approved by Mercedes-Benz. I think the other German manufacturers also had similar statements. I've used it once a year in my American cars as well. Since coming to this group I noticed the product didn't seem to have a lot of support. I've been thinking of using it in my 911, but have held off. Anyone else have an opinion of Techron? It can be found in fuel at the pump.
I would never consider any oil additives, but rather use good oil. I've been running Liquimoly engine oil for years now.
I use Liquimoly engine oil. I put one bottle of Techron in the fuel tank before each oil/filter change. Just rolled over 147K miles, so must be doing something right.
I don't think any of it builds up, nor would you want it to. I think it is just a thin oil that lubes the top of the rings which is probably good for the bore, a known problem area for us, and it burns clean. At the worst it doesn't hurt nor cost much so, some benefit perhaps and low cost with no harm done. I doubt any of the expensive Techron or their like do much more.
Not into oil additives either, but there is a lot of hype for DT40 on this forum. But I believe I read it is a Mobil-1 base with it's own ppm of assorted additives that everyone else uses. I mean, maybe M-1 might have 800ppm of ZDDP but DT40 might have 1000, so is it a magnitude better product? It is pushed by the forum gurus, who get paid some combination of consulting fees, commissions, royalties, high markup, etc and the flock not only follows, they hype it too. This is why it costs 50% more than most Porsche A40 approved oils. There is a lot of that kind of hype there though. UOA - some how $30 Blackstone tests are not good enough, need to pay $60, $30 magnetic drain plugs that cost $9 everywhere else (must be the hp gain) and not to mention high priced bearings (I said don't mention bearings)
Ditto for Liqui-moly (Leichtlauf version) made in Germany. It's on the A40 list and it's $7/liter. Since Porsche has moved to a 5w-50 recommendation for our 996 I hope LM will make this weight or I may need to consider M1

Just mention the god of FSI in every post and buy everything LNE has to sell. Buy cases of the god-oil sold by Driven and have Used oil analysis done by LNE’s sponsors. Your engine will not only last 500,000 miles, it will drop raw diamonds through the oil drain. Drink the Kool-Aid and post praises online as much as possible.
I used to worked in the industry. For years Techron was the best, I worked for a petroleum refiner who had many gas stations we would use the Techron additive in our gas. For those of you who dont know the base fuel is the same in a specific region the difference is that at the fuel terminal you mix in the specific brand additive. I have driven my car about 3,000 miles. I used two bottles of Techron and also the Italian tube up and the car runs great. I believe the car had older gas in the tank. Im only using shell v power, and Bucees ethanol free 92 octane. Last week did first oil change, filter was
clean, oil looked real good. I put Mobil 1, car has used that all its life. Mobil 1 has over 2,100 ppm zinc and phosphorus that is good, but better yet TBN average of 12.56, a lot of detergents keep engine clean you will have efficient engine. No need to add any additives, it costs about half a million dollars to formulate an oil you dont need to disrupt the chemical balance by adding something that was not formulated in, some additives at higher concentrations fall out of solution. Being a retired tribologist my opinion of Porsche going to a 50 oil is just a bandaid to address wear on some of these engines. For the Motrheads a ticker oil means additional friction and heat therefore less power. My car is not using any oil so I dont need to put a bandaid in it. A final thought right now advance auto parts Mobil 1 5 quarts filter, catch tray and funnel $33.99. For $80 you get 10 quarts, 2 oil filters and etc.
